Lance Armstrong’s spokesperson, Mark Higgins, has told Cyclocross Magazine that Lance is trying race Cross Vegas, and is planning on “getting in just in time for the race barring any flight delays.”
Everyone here is all pants-a-wettin at the possibility of seeing the man in action.
I have not seen Armstrong in the flesh racing since the NorWest cup of 1994 when he rode around in the rain wearing his rainbow jersey.
Finally, after literally tens of minutes working on this problem, I solved the front brake chatter issue.
I took the pads off and used a knife to shave down the trailing edge (as the wheel turns) of the pads. Since I could not adjust the toe-in on these TRP cross cantilevers I just modified the pads to assure that the front of the pad hit the rim first.
Problem solved.
Just because I hate working on bikes does not mean that I am totally pro at this junk.
My first race will be the weekend of October 4-5. I am only going to do one of the two. Two questions for my readers:
- Orono or Hudson? I am leaning towards Orono.
- 45min race or 60min race for my first event?
I started this project with the intention to enter the 45min races all season. But the training seems to be going well and I think I can handle a 60 minute effort. So should I just man up and enter the 60min race first time out or stick with the 45min plan and see how the first race goes?
It’s easy to get caught up in the moment of activity, convincing yourself that your current level of exertion is beyond anything you have every done in the past. At the time I was pretty sure that this mornings practice race was really tough.
Upon my arrival back home I took some time to think about it. I still think it was really tough.
As opposed to the course last week, which was mostly flat with only one short run up, this course today had a lot of up and down. A long run up, some short punchy climbs, and two long descents. There were not as many technical sections, save one corner where you could gain a real advantage if you could convince yourself to lay off the brakes. Last week you could gain some advantage if you could ride the technical sections smoothly. Today was more of a pure fitness test. I give myself a B-.
There were some problems. I hit one of Ped’s self destructing barriers and spent a bit trying to put it back together. Later I dropped my chain and had to dismount to put it back on.
I still have some work to do to work on uphill leg speed and smoothness over the barriers. But I have some more time before my first race of the year.
