2009 Racing

Friday, November 7th, 2008

RADIUS track series will be back for 2009. Bigger and better. Probably four events: June - September. Two team events and two individual events.

Some ideas for next year:

What do you think of a "short track" sprint type cyclocross series? Half mile loop, A/B/C race format, 20/30/45 minutes, 3 or 4 events in September and early October. Thoughts?

How about a Friday night cyclocross series in October? Would 3 races per weekend be too much or would the market support it?

Feedback in the comments please.

Breaking News - Doug Swanson retires from Cyclocross

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Here is the evidence.

I regret that I may have played a roll in his decision. At Hudson last weekend I saw him coming up and getting ready to lap me and I have to admit that I pushed a bit harder to keep him from catching me right away. We were about to go into a technical section and I did not want to have to wait and let him pass so I kept the throttle open and I am afraid that I may have cracked him.

I mean, he went on to win the race anyway, but I can’t shake the guilt that I backed him into a corner and have forced him to rethink his season and maybe his career. It’s happened before. Joe Parkin and the Battle Creek cross race of 1997. Ugly. Joe won that race too, but the look on my face when he lapped me certainly caused him years of regret and probably some nightmares.

Doug, if you are reading, I really hope you reconsider. You really did look good when you lapped me last Sunday and I firmly believe that despite this slight setback you can still salvage your season. Just pull yourself up by the Capos, or DeFeets, or whatever socks you wear, and try try again just like my mom used to say. At the very least just use this year as a learning year and you’ll be better than ever next year. Quitting never got anyone anywhere except maybe Lance Armstrong.

Good luck to you sir!

(Of course, Doug may just be selling a frame that he has already replaced, in which case never mind.)

I know getting beat in the A Race can be hard on the moral, but these kids did not deserve this.

Good start though!

cross debut

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

My first race will be the weekend of October 4-5. I am only going to do one of the two. Two questions for my readers:

- Orono or Hudson? I am leaning towards Orono.

- 45min race or 60min race for my first event?

I started this project with the intention to enter the 45min races all season. But the training seems to be going well and I think I can handle a 60 minute effort. So should I just man up and enter the 60min race first time out or stick with the 45min plan and see how the first race goes?

I am leaning towards the 60min race…
