Politics #fb

For all the frustration I have had over the years with politicians in this country and the system in which they operate I still believed that, for all its flaws, we had the best form of government in the world.

It’s been made obvious to me this week that I am wrong.

Our government is filled with children.

Those on the right, with their temper tantrums, lies and distortions, treating every policy debate as a simple game to be won or lost.

Those on the left, gutless cowards who obviously worry more about being liked and re-elected as opposed to just getting the job done and standing upon a record of accomplishment.

And now today the U.S. Supreme Court stating that multi-billion dollar corporations have all the power they need in order to buy elections.

Maybe I will be proved wrong, but I am pretty pessimistic right now.

I think the political system in the United States is broken beyond repair and I don’t see how things will ever change.

I guess I should not be surprised. The Roman Empire once ruled the known world. Look how that turned out.

I don’t think the Supreme Court ruling will have the dramatic effect you imagine. Corporations will continue to funnel their money through PACs and use lobbyists to keep their ambitions on the down-low. They’ve already had all the power they’ve needed to buy elections.

Otherwise, I agree with your sentiments, although I have to give Obama some credit for pushing ahead with politically risky initiatives, although they tend to get watered down in the process.

@smithers: You truly believe this isn’t the way it has always been?

Odd that you should mention the Romans. Here’s a lunchtime video that goes through the forms of government and how they function. I found it interesting.

Smithers, take a couple weeks off of MSNBC and stick to CNN for a while. It will help calm the nerves a bit.

I agree, Smithers, very discouraging. So few of our “leaders” analyze ideas and bills and respond based on their merits. If the other party proposes it, they’re against it. So much negativity… kind of like some Masters races I’ve been in.

The more rights of persons that corporations get, the let right I have as a person. Just a thought.

@dube’: Thanks for the video. While I learned some things from it, I think this was more of an editorial on what happened to Rome then fact.
Also, I think Rome ran into a lot of money issues by extending their armies to far and needlessly invading other countries. Kind of like what happened during the last Republican administration who didn’t seem to rule by law at all and extended governments control over the people.

It’s too bad for the Romans that another administration did not come along and take over so they could blame all their screw ups on someone else.

I think this is exactly what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the first amendment. Multi-million dollar international conglomerates need to have their free-speech rights maintained in order to coerce politicians to pass legislation in their favor. Why do you guys hate America?
