    That does seem quite extreme for him to say what he did. It would have been way more affective to simply talk about why he disapproves of the policy.

    I think you’re missing Matthews’ point, which I understand to be this:
    The armed forces of this nation is increasingly political (and vocal about their politics, mind you) in nature, and that political bent is decidedly conservative. That, in and of itself, is a threat to our nation’s security. Our Founding Fathers had the foresight to appoint the President of this nation as the “Commander-in-Chief” of the armed forces for precisely that reason — to keep the military out of politics. If the military complex refuses, in essence, to properly acknowledge and accept the President and his constitutional role as their superior and treat him as such, then that is very troubling, indeed. Members of the armed forces and disagree internally all they want with the President, but the public behavior expressed their superior in this instance is completely unacceptable, and I believe that is the notion that Matthews was alluding to.
