the joy of bike work

October 8th, 2009 | Posted by Smithers at 6:46 pm in Cycling |

I’m figuring it out now.

Checked my bike crap two days before the race and found that my non-drive side BB bearing is almost totally seized. Now I have to scramble tomorrow to get the bearing replaced.

So much awesome, so little time.

It’s all my personal mechanics fault…Like I am supposed to wait for him to grow up to keep my bike in good working order. Dammit, he’s almost four years old! If he can pee in the potty he can overhaul a bottom bracket.

@Steve E: Washing the bike caused my bearing to seize up?

Yah….like in spraying water on the bike washes the grease out….like???? My advice, just leave the mud on it keeps the grease in.

I still remember one time changing a bottom bracket with Tom D (this is a guy that used to use a toothbrush to detail his car so you can imagine the attention his bike got) anyway we pulled the the bottom bracket out and several ounces of water drained out with it…..

If it’s a standard size sealed bearing, Gopher Bearing over on 280 and University is pretty good for getting bearings quickly and cheaply.

UT cups can’t be that hard to come by. I know it’s not the junk Campy was making three years ago because square taper is invincible, just ask any rando/retrogrouch type.
