Strib:

The Edina City Council surprised some residents Tuesday night by directing city staff to include bike lanes in improvement plans for W. 70th. That contradicted the recommendations of the advisory committee that for more than two years had been studying ways to make the street safer.

“What happened last night was a sucker punch to residents,” said Jan Ferrell, who lives on W. 70th.

“I just don’t know how anyone can justify having a bike trail in my front yard as an asset to my home,” she said. “It’s very discouraging to have this happen after public comment was over.”

Steve Brown, chairman of the study committee, told the council that as a commercial real estate agent, he thought the loss of on-street parking could affect the property values of homeowners on W. 70th. The street is so busy that residents sometimes have trouble backing out of their driveways.

Brown said he did not know if bike lanes would enhance property values.

What a shame that the City of Edina is making life so difficult for those who want to park their dumb ugly cars out on the street.

Sucka punched fool!

I don’t think that Jan Ferrell has ever really been sucker punched.

Hey, why do I want to look at your big stupid parked Denali when I ride my bike around town? It’s eye pollution.

In my opinion, overnight on street parking in residential areas should be punishable by fine or imprisonment or both. I’m so tired of people thinking that cities need to accommodate their need to drive all alone around the city.

I got news for those residents along West 70th. Bike lanes, the lack of on street parking and traffic calming measures do not lower property values. Quite the opposite. Pull head out of ass please.

So whats the problem with someone riding a bike past your house? I live on a somewhat busy street and Id give an appendage to have all the cars that drive by replaced by bikes. No noise, and I dont think a bike collision is going to kill your kid, significant other, neighbor or pet. Sounds like the lady mentioned above needs a serious spanking and I know the man that would be happy to give it to her.

Agree with Eric 100%. What kind of idiot moron thinks that vehicle noise/pollution is better than quiet?

I guess anyone riding 70th for a while should be prepared to get doored. Anyone stupid enough to think like these people do is stupid enough to try dooring a cyclist.

I’m not sure this is a slam dunk Smither’s.

Let’s take the fact that this is bike lanes out of the equation.

If your residential advisory committee has been working on proposing something for two years and then the city council comes back in one swoop and issues orders that contradict what you had been working on for two years, I’d be pissed off too.

It’s almost like NBC saying they’ve decided to keep Leno on the Tonight Show after I’ve been waiting for Conan for what seems like forever. stupid Leno.

@Little d: sometimes government has to squash individual preference.
