Giving it all away

January 12th, 2009 | Posted by Smithers at 8:11 am in Politics |

I read an article in last Sunday’s New York Times.

A decade ago, when Rudolph W. Giuliani was mayor, police shootings and the frisking of 80,000 young men a year stirred citywide outrage. David A. Paterson, the a state senator, and former Mayor David N. Dinkins submitted to arrest in demonstration outside Police Headquarters. The City Council held hearings and The New York Times wrote of “a yawning chasm” between officers and the citizens they served.

How many were frisked ten years later?

Police officers frisked more than 500,000 New Yorkers in 2008, more than 80 percent of them young black or Latino men. The police arrest only 4 percent of those whom they frisk.

80,000 friskings in 1998 provoking outrage and protest. An increase of over 6 fold in 2008 and the reaction is…anything?

What changed?

How much of our personal freedom and liberty have we willingly handed away over the last seven years?

I got frisked–along with everyone else–going to a Vikings game. That would acount for about 50,000 frisks in 2 hours.

a burnout kid making $10/hr in a streched out polo shirt with a wand is a bit different than a 220# dude with a badge and a gun that can put your ass away for the weekend…
