Indoor Racing Update

nsc

Brought the cross bike up to the National Sports Center artificial turf and tested things out. It’s just like riding on grass except it seems like you can corner a lot harder without slipping. I also tested out a rear wheel lock up to see the impact on the turf and I found no evidence of damage.

It’s a massive room, almost 15,000 square feet. Plenty of space to have a good racing course.

If my contact at the NSC gives me the green light then I think we will be all systems go for an indoor series starting in January.

The first night of the series would serve as a test for the rest of the series. Assuming there is no damage or problems then the series would continue.

It looks like beer on the premises would not be a problem. There is a cafeteria next to the field with a window to the field, beer would be restricted to that room.

If it works out it will be hilarious, a good workout, and a lot of fun.

More news to come after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I think Tainter deserves some of the credit… and I also think indoor cx is gay…
there should be a rule that only track bikes are allowed within 1000 feet of the entire NSC…

Word. I want to preregister too.

I like the flyover idea. It is feasible…

I think Tainter deserves some thanks for this, although his idea was fixed gear track bikes, not gay cx bikes…. makes me shudder….

@skibby: absolutely, thanks to Tainter for certain.

However, this project is in no way yet a done deal. In regards to track bikes, from what I have seen and was told today, fixed gear bikes may be an even larger problem on the turf than geared bikes. A critical element to having races on the turf may be being able to change up the course for every race, something that would be impossible with an oval loop.

@Bergstrom: anything is feasible. but who is going to build it, pay for it, get it there, store it. I’m all ears if you gots a plan.

I had no intention of using a flyover. There wouldn’t be any more mayhem and chaos then the 2000 Tracy and Gary Pre-Nuptial Cross and Croquet Tournament.

You should try to get inside the metrodome. That way you could ride through the bleachers.

I went to a supercross in the detroit silverdome once where they built dirt jumps into the stands. Pretty cool for a flat out redneck affair.

I also went to a monster truck show in the silverdome.

    I’d be all over this.

And yes, my first thought was also open field bike polo. That would be sweet.
