Ecomonomics

November 20th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 8:35 am in Politics |

Hey, the economy sucks.

Retail sales are down, housing starts are at a 50 year low, blah blah blah.

Have any of you actually been affected by the economic downturn yet?

I am not talking about pretend money. My wife and I have lost $75,000 in retirement savings, but we have lots of time until retirement and I am pretty confident that we’ll see that money come back.

No, I am talking about actual pain that you might be feeling. Been turned down for a loan? Had your car repossessed? House been foreclosed? Lost job? Been shunned by the family cat?

Just wondering how deep the hurt has migrated to date.

    I’ve been shunned by the cat. I don’t think the economy has anything to do with it. Do sleepless nights count?

    Children shunning me. Their inheritance reduced by around 40% and counting. Can’t take it with you…

    Food prices noticeably up (feeding two kids, besides wife and self)

    On work front… we had a very thick bench (IT consulting firm) during Aug through Oct. Only reason its down now is aggressive sales force and come non-optimal fits work wise.

    My wife’s hours at work have been reduced and her client list (at Jenny Craig) has been slowly shrinking.

    My dream of becoming a househusband is slipping away.

    @Jake:

    Isn’t that what’s supposed to happen if you’re on Jenny Craig? :)

    Was Smithers on her client list?

    Her clients are shrinking, but the number of clients she has is also shrinking.

    Smithers isn’t one of her clients. If her were, he’d look a lot better in a skinsuit.

    I actually chose to leave my job for another one. It wasn’t about money or people, I just wanted a change of pace and some free tuition.
