Indoor Cycling Series Questions

November 17th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 4:55 pm in Local Cycling |

I am in the early stages of working on a racing series for January and February of 2009.

It would be an Indoor Cyclocross Criterium Series.

I am thinking of A/B/C races, 40 minute/30 minute/20 minute. Individuals would self select their racing category but I would probably have some general guidelines (Cat 1-2 in the 40 min race for example).

Every other weekend, racing starts around 9pm and goes until midnight.

Questions for readers:

- Are you interested?
- Would you take part?
- How much would you pay to take part? $15 too much?
- Oval course or something more complicated?
- Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for the races?
- Barriers or no barriers? Keep in mind that you would be turning laps pretty quickly and would have to hit that barrier every lap unless we figured out a way to put it in every 10 laps or so?

I need your feedback on this. If things work out I may have something to announce after Thanksgiving.

Not so much. I’d come to watch if adult beverages were involved though!

in the effort of retaining/gaining fitness, I’d be in. Call it $10, and you’d get me there WAY easier. I’m a broke ass.

and let people bet. that’d be hilarious and fun. beer and betting. like a race track for bikes…(sounds familiar…)

I’d show up. Sounds like lots o’ fun. I’d want barriers or some kind of obstacle to keep it from being like a track race.

  8. By chedda at 6:37 pm on Nov 17, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

    more info.

yes, still, either way. i say yes to barriers. oval is cool, BUT, how do you keep it from being super fast lap? can we flood it? wet astroturf could be fun. can we import a sand pit?

how do we make this a “cross” event, and not a grass crit with a barrier?

Sounds fun, in for watching and maybe racing depending on location/nights. $10-15 sounds good.

I say only allow the first 30 people overall. The last thing you want is too many people to show up at your desired location. It isn’t the biggest place in the world and there could be conflicts with other groups, and too many could be a bad thing.

I like the idea, but $15 is to much. Try $13 and I am there.

    :)

$13 will not do, make it $14.65 and I’m there.

    IN…barriers

  13. By Joe at 8:48 pm on Nov 17, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

Sounds fun, what part of the metro were you planning on. You could make the entry fee $10 and a bottle(or two)of decent beer to add to the prize winnings.

and $13 is WAY too much to charge. Have you no morals? Whats next? Chip-timming?

geez. Why I remember when Ped put on races for $10. Back in the day…

    anyways.

    …and barriers….

  16. By skibbyhatescross at 9:18 pm on Nov 17, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

I’d do it, without barriers. maybe have some barriers in, then barriers out races. There is some sand in there for the long jump pit, at least there used to be…

should have a fixed gear event, cross bikes belong outside…

  17. By Smithers at 9:41 pm on Nov 17, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

OK, if this thing works out:

    - No beverages of any kind other than water will be allowed inside the facility. I don’t make the rules.

    - If you guys want betting I would leave it to you to organize it. I’m not going to federal pound me in the ass prison.

    - I am not planning on fixed gears as I think turn out would be better with geared bikes.

    - Maybe do shorter 10 minute races as qualifying heats that lead to a 20 minute final. Any other ideas for race formats?

    - I am leaning towards a non-oval circuit. More turns will make the circuit longer. Maybe have a barrier appear every five or ten laps.

    - I would need an MC and a DJ. This really needs to be an event.

Anyone familiar with RADIUS knows my affinity towards circus races. This might be the topper.

More info to come if I can work out the details.

    Keep the input coming.

Run races that only last 5 or 10 minutes, maybe 20 minutes tops. Run smaller groups, i.e. “heats” where you have to advance. Another idea is to do some sort of team relay, perhaps where teams are formed in a draw (with some sort of balancing by rider category or handicap).

Have lots of twisting and turning requiring changes in speed. Sure, have barriers but note that they can be dangerous too. Personally, I think fast barrier sections on flat ground are kind of bogus, as they hardly ever make any difference in a race. Place them in such a way that they actually change the pace of the race. Whatever.

I’d pay $10 bucks if I was able to do 3 or 4 races on the night.

  19. By Super Rookie at 10:29 pm on Nov 17, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

In all seriousness, I would pay whatever entry fee the organizer decides in order to make this event self-sustaining. That was the case for Radius and I would assume would be the case for this.

I also think “heats” would work best.

I also think that “un-organized” gambling is an easy thing to “not-organize.”

I also think that this event could be highly successful and I would even volunteer to be a “non-official.”

I also think that a cyclocross miss-and-out would be a sweet race instore.

I can’t wait to see the emails that you get from “persons with interest in the facility” that will try to cancel your event in advance due to irrational opinions that are not based in any form of reality.

    - yes.
    - most likely.
    - 15 would be a bit steep for me week in-week out; every other week - no problem.
    - Oval? I don’t like nascar.
    - Friday or Saturday, leaning Saturday.
    - Barriers for sure.

I like heats, but 10 minutes seems short to me… if you aren’t a sprinter, you are f’ed. Volunteering sounds like a good opportunity too — agreed with Rookie. Perhaps participation requires 1 night of some sort of volunteering instead of the beverage with fee per night idea? I disagree with Dan I in that barrier sections on the fast flats are not bogus — they weed out the sloppy from the smooth. And gears yes. The rest: whatever you decide; it’s your series. Thank you!

I normally pay $10 for a hour of play on the ice. I would pay up to $15 to do this a couple times a month!!! If I were home. :(

    I like the heat idea.

A mobile sand pit? One that you could low trailer in and have a ramp up it?

Barriers or without It could be like an indoor CX crit, that would be fun.

    This is big time thinking!!!

one more thing. If turnout is what you want, don’t go throw the USAC. I think you’d get more people up there racing if they didn’t have to buy a one day to participate. That makes things expensive in a hurry. just sayin’. I got nothing.

Maybe start with an open riding period, so we get time in the saddle. I like the heats. Avoid the one & done with a last chance qualifier or something like it. High speed barriers in small space - problematic, but interesting. I’d help out with set up/tear down etc.

  28. By JT at 9:54 am on Nov 18, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

boy, you guys sure like your barriers, I guess I just don’t get it. don’t you get enough of that during cross?? :-)

    - yes, interested, yes would take part don’t if I don’t have to jump over anything.

    - $15 would be the max, depending on format of racing. lord knows I’ve spent $15 on things much worse.

    - Oval or cigar course.

    - Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for the races? — they all work

    - No barriers. straight up flat track, grass track, short track - whatever you want to name it.

keep them short - 5, 7 or 10 lap heats. move onto a longer main then to end the night.

Awesome idea. Heats imply that a lot of guys will end up standing around not racing after they’ve ben eliminated. $15 is fine. I’m all in.

    Things to keep in mind:

    - This won’t be true cyclocross
    - This won’t be grass track racing
    - This will be something new and different

My only concern at this point is the venue. I have a meeting this Thursday to get some more information.

    More to come soon.

Don’t do heats, do a series of short, high intensity events. Use the velodrome model, make a group ride like hell then give them some time to regroup while some other group rides like hell. Everyone gets a couple of races, keep things moving.

Maybe this is just me, but I concluded a long time ago that if I spent a lot of time riding nowhere in the basement there was a cost in my enthusiasm later in the summer. Riding bikes that go nowhere is for retards, get out and ride for real.

Interesting! So you consider riding 250 - 500 meter loops not riding nowhere?

I think this is a great concept as far as indoor grass track racing but with geared bikes or those with brakes do we have to worry about skidding with brakes? That turf must be really expensive. Cleats? Are they ok?

i had my first experience on that kind of turf the other day. i was amazed at how durable it is. it’s pretty hard to damage it- unless we are talking about flamming barriers since i’m sure it would melt.

I would be down with this.
I think a winter series race that gives everyone 2-3 shorter races a night would be the ticket. Some kind of season-ending incentive. Free drinks works.
How about one of the many farm venues at the State Fair?
