injury

October 8th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 9:26 pm in Training, Health, Fitness |

I don’t know if it’s a carry over from the race last Sunday, or something new tonight, but I have something possibly serious going on with my left quadricep.

Two laps into our cyclocross practice race tonight the quad started to tighten up. I figured I would ride through it but after a few more laps, and a couple of hard efforts, it started to feel worse. I wanted to get in 45 minutes at race pace but decided to shut down after 30 minutes and see what was going on.

A few minutes after I stopped it was clear something serious was wrong. The quad was very sore and tight. By the time I got home I was no longer able to walk comfortably.

Advil, ice, compression and lots of hope that it feels better tomorrow. I am going to try and get a massage in the next day or so to see if I can get it loosened up.

I am worried that racing this weekend might not be possible. However, I don’t want to bag the rest of my cross season just to get one race in.

It’s a bit depressing to have put this much work in and now have to deal with this but I suppose it’s inevitable at 40 years old. Honestly, I should have spend a bit more time warming up and stretching before I started riding hard.

Fingers crossed.

If I can’t race this weekend I’ll go out to Wirth and kick some young kid in the knee to share the pain.

You should have someone lay hands on you and expell the witchcraft. It helped my calf.

I had the same kind of thing while running way back. Ice & aspirin is great, and make sure you get some exercise & stretching, and it should resolve itself pretty soon. A friend of mine in college who had the same thing, and (at my recommendation) went for a little run, called me “Dr.” after his leg loosened up.

I don’t promise great results, but it will help.

the national champ was telling me last night about an old guy doing cross and blowing out his achilles. Cross is hard on us old people…

‘cross is made for old guys,
short duration/maximum effort, certain level of technical skill required… i’m gonna be doing cyclocross when i’m 70 yrs old

i vehemently disagree. Time Trials are made for old guys. Jumping off of a bike at speed and hopping over barriers with arthritic, damaged, joints/tendons increases chances for injury. Now if you ride up to the barrier, stop, hop off and walk over the barrier, or ride around the barrier then it’s ok…

Yea, I pretty much totally disagree with that as well.

In no way, shape or form is cross made for old guys.

Sure, there are some old guys who have the resiliency to do it, but they are in the extreme minority.

Road cycling all the time will give you good lung power and leg power, but that’s about it. I used to do lots of other things in younger days when I had the time, but now I just know I’ll be sore as hell for awhile if I jump back into rock climbing, running, water skiing, sand volleyball, tennis, or whatever. CX is great cross training, which is going to be good for you overall, but you’ve got to ease into it, especially as you get older. My overall fitness is often the best of the whole year in mid CX season. It’s great prep for X-C skiing too.

Been there, done that with the old guy/cross thing. Yes, I loved it, maybe I’ll do it again, no it won’t be competitive. It’s just natural that the joints wear out, and the constant impact of cross is devastating. MTB’ing is easier on your body.
