sub 30 lbs sub 2 atmospheres

October 3rd, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 4:06 pm in Cycling |

I have been experimenting with low tire pressure on the cyclocross bike.

I use clincher tires, so far anyway.

High speed hard surface turning seems to be fine.

Low speed hard surface turning feels like my front tire is going to fold over and roll off.

Is this typical? A sign of something I should correct? A problem that would be solved with tubulars?

No flats so far, so that is good news.

UPDATE: Yea, I don’t really understand those psi numbers in the first place.

i’m a hack — but my jedi master once told me to go low. i bottom out on rocks and roots all the time. seems to work fine. i’ve never pinch flatted (yet) and i guess the sensations i feel are similar to what you describe. i’d stick with it.

Talk about a flip-flop, and I’m not just talking about the PSI unit when you mean two atmospheres.

Sub 30 is pushing it on clinchers, especially if you’ve had a few too many pumpkin loafs…

I keep them pretty hard. I don’t ride flat tires. I’ll live with the crashes.

A.vdPoel used to run that kind of pressure, but he was running those crazy, giant, made-in-some-old-french-dude’s-garage sew-ups that you can only get if you’ve been runner up in the world championships a million times. I climbed on his bike one time and nearly killed myself.
    Have fun.

you are teetering on pinch flat…I won’t run my clinchers less then 35 and I’ve had a few less pumpkin loafs then you…

i’ll run my tubulars less then 30 and I bottom them out sometimes…

bottom out on tubulars one thing, bottom out on a clincher and it’s pinch-flatabulous, cyclocross is varied terrain including pave` and potholes, it’s a road sport not mtb

    Interesting.

Funny though, I don’t remember any stupid LeMans start in any road race I have ever entered.
