No one could lose a race like Steve Bauer.

Thanks for posting this. I was just thinking about that finish the other evening wondering what ever happened to poor Steve Bauer and Claude Criquielion. I’m a big fan of both and just think the whole finished sucked.

I mean, what was Claude trying to do, squeaking around through the barriers? It was a suicide run. I can see why Bauer was DQ’d, what he did was just as stupid. But it was a tough call since it seemed like he was as much holding his line as well as trying not to get knocked down by Claude. The worst part was that they both let Fondriest win.

I’m glad Criquielion didn’t win in court against Bauer, but I wonder what sort of hell Bauer went through anyways living in Belgium after usurping the heir apparent. I remember he had to hire guards to protect him from the death threats. Those few seconds had to have been hard on both of them.

@timmer: I agree, Fondriest had it. I don’t know why but when I read the original report on the race I never got the idea that Fondriest was a significant part of the final. But he was right there and deserved to win.
