Karen Walker

September 9th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 9:21 am in Politics |

John McCain’s running mate, typical Republican crook.

She’s on the campaign trail continuing to lie about her support of the "Bridge to Nowhere" and congressional earmarks.

She loves to blow on and on about putting the state jet on eBay, even though the online auction site did not sell the plane and she ended up selling it for a loss to a private company.

Fiscal conservative? She left the town of Wasilla wallowing in debt after her term as mayor.

Alaskan tax payers are paying for the lawyers that are defending her involvement with the Trooper scandal.

She also billed Alaskan tax payers for 312 nights spent in her own home.

Not original, not very mavericky.

Wherever a Republican goes, ethical issues and massive deficits are sure to follow.

And the media will miss the more nuanced issue…

If the McCain campaign is willing to do such slipshod work on vetting a VP. What would a McCain administration look like if he decides to shoot from the hip again?

Would they stand up to him? Would they try to analyze the situation? Or would it be yes sir, we’ll pull the trigger. Just tell us which foot.

It’s not just her… it’s also how McCain and company came to the decision to pick her. I _don’t_ want that sort of leadership in the Whitehouse.

In addition, Karen Walker, aka Sarah Palin, continues to spew about her maverick fiscal conservatism and how she will rail against earmarks and pork barrel projects. What crap. Karen has lobbied for and won earmarks at a rate of $300 per Alaska resident. Alaska has the highest per captia earmarks of any state. Just for comparison, Illinois- $25 per resident. According to the AP, under Palin, Alaska is by far the largest consumer of federal pet project resources.

I’m a little worried that the Maverick personality message the Repukes are putting out there is working.
I had some hope after watching CNN last night and Pallin’s Minister (or whatever he is) talking about how Israel is getting punished with rockets for not converting to Christianity. Who believe’s this crap? Why isn’t this all over the media today much like Obama’s minister’s word’s of hate?
Or the youtube vids of Pallin herself preaching about Iraq being god’s war and telling people in her congregation to pray for a pipeline, etc.
    Ick.

My favorite is the one about the state troopers. Somehow a trooper threatens to kill his father in law, tases his own son, and gets drunk in a black & white, and the state police commission fails to figure out that maybe, just maybe, this isn’t the guy to trust with a Glock and that black & white.

And yes, I’m aware that it’s claimed that the son “asked for it,” but please–if the guy doesn’t act on the fact that they do occasionally kill and refuse to comply with his son, he needs to go. Period.

And the plane thing? Hey, even if you don’t get “your price” for it, reality is that having a couple of million in the bank is better than having a plane that isn’t being used. Depreciation would have nabbed that 300 grand in a year anyways.

right bb, and what about that “uppity” librarian that wouldn’t allow Missy Mayor to go through the books and toss the ones that she didn’t agree with….who did she think SHE was anyway? Sarah taught her a lesson about support ! Honestly, these public servants just don’t listen well when god is speaking….

BB — deserving of being fired or not, it’s called due process. Republicans seem to have forgotten that it’s in the Constitution.

Palin also fired, according to the Politico, “a campaign adviser whose mother-in-law fought Palin’s legislative agenda, a local political mentor who she felt represented the “old boys’ network,” a police chief who she said tried to intimidate her with “stern look[s]” and a state commissioner who refused to fire her sister’s ex-husband.”

my personal fav – “stern look(s)”

  12. By Bike Bubba at 11:20 am on Sep 9, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

cjb, due process, Constitutionally speaking, does not protect government workers from the consequences of their actions if they’ve been found to violate basic expectations of behavior. It prevents the government from taking life, liberty, or property without a legal structure per the 4th, 5h, and 6th Amendments.

As a trooper’s job is not life, liberty, or property, it doesn’t qualify. Personally, I think that review of a trooper’s job status should NOT end with the recommendation of the disciplinary board, but should extend if need be to those who set that board up–the commish and the Governor. Remember the adage about “inmates running the asylum”?

And Family Ties, sorry, but she didn’t censor any books. She asked the librarian whether books might be removed from the collection if they were objectionable.

Quite frankly, the answer should be an emphatic “YES” here. Civilized people realize that there are certain areas where certain things do not need to be seen.

Bubba – Pictures are different then words. Where do you draw the line on censoring thought and ideas? You’re on a slippery slope there young man where you’re questioning many freedoms as an American you should hold dear to your heart.

  14. By cjb at 11:51 am on Sep 9, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

BB – I’m glad, as a Republican, you agree that due process exists in the constituion. Your interpration, however, is not shared by teh courts. Government employees have a property interest in their jobs. They are to be accorded reasons for their discharge and given a fair hearing.

But, really, you’re going to defend Palin’s record? Good luck with that. Just admit you’re a yellow dog repub and it doesn’t matter who they nominate as VP, you’ll vote for them as long as he/she toes the party line. There’s no other rational reason that someone would support her for VP of the US.

  15. By Bike Bubba at 12:18 pm on Sep 9, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

Little D; the 1st amendment protects free press, but it does NOT mandate that public funds be spent on smut in public libraries.

CJB; no, your job is not your property, and any judge that decides otherwise needs to be removed. The court decisions you refer to actually refer to (often misguided) federal laws that govern the removal of government workers from their posts.

And me a yellow dog republican? Bite your tongue. I just think that when the radical left has come up with 75 lying assaults on a decent woman, they ought to be called on it. I’ve also called conservatives at times (obviously not here) on allegations against Senator Obama.

What were the library materials in question? BB refers to it as “smut”. Does that mean it was a D.H. Lawrence novel, or a scientific volume about the theory of evolution, or a copy of Juggs? I seriously want to know what Palin wanted removed from the library.

If the McCain campaign is willing to do such slipshod work on vetting a VP. What would a McCain administration look like if he decides to shoot from the hip again?

Ever heard of Iran? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…. Bomb, bomb Iran….” – McCain

And the plane thing? Hey, even if you don’t get “your price” for it, reality is that having a couple of million in the bank is better than having a plane that isn’t being used. Depreciation would have nabbed that 300 grand in a year anyways.

The point is not the selling price but the fact that she so easily and eagerly distorts the truth. If you want to defend her, explain the earmarks bullshit; explain the $$ from the bridge to nowhere. Substance, bubba, substance.

BB — deserving of being fired or not, it’s called due process. Republicans seem to have forgotten that it’s in the Constitution.

Indeed. And it doesn’t seem to have been forgotten, it’s been wilfully ignored to the detriment of us all. Was it not Palin who criticized Obama for being concerned with “miranda rights”?

Quite frankly, the answer should be an emphatic “YES” here. Civilized people realize that there are certain areas where certain things do not need to be seen.

Anyone know what these materials were? Bubba’s assessment of “smut” isn’t particularly legitimate nor do I believe that he would truthfully represent the nature of these items.

The court decisions you refer to actually refer to (often misguided) federal laws that govern the removal of government workers from their posts.

Do you ever go back and read what you’ve written before hitting “submit comment”? Nothing about your statement accords you or the crooks you support the right to ignore federal law (that’s the law, now, you hear, son?) just cause you don’t like it. You do not get to choose which laws you feel like following. You either do, or you get fined/go to jail.

And me a yellow dog republican? Bite your tongue. I just think that when the radical left has come up with 75 lying assaults on a decent woman, they ought to be called on it. I’ve also called conservatives at times (obviously not here) on allegations against Senator Obama.

Don’t be shy, now, bubba. It’s ok to be a yellow-dog republican. CJB – I believe Little D aptly calls this being a lemming. As for those 75 lying assaults, care to share some of ‘em? Actually, care to point out which of the ones we’ve discussed in this venue are lies? Bubba, your hypocricy is almost unbearable… you defend Bush’s lies yet you get upset that someone is allegedly telling lies about Palin? Which lies have led to peoples’ deaths? Do you have no shame? (that one’s rhetorical, btw).

On the book banning subject, there doesn’t seem to be an authenticated list of books or even if she inquired about specific books but just the fact that she inquired makes me worried. And Bubba, didn’t you watch ‘Footloose’? Go rent it if you dare…

  20. By Bike Bubba at 1:58 pm on Sep 9, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

Little D, exactly on the censorship issue. She asked about the issue, was told “no I won’t censor anything,” and apparently fired the librarian later–and then reinstated her. I don’t mind this, because quite frankly there are some things that don’t belong in a public library, and it’s not a 1st Amendment issue.

Checkbook, I don’t defend peoples’ lies, whether you like it or not. Like it or not, there are a bunch of them–” Bristol is Trig’s Mother,” “lied about the plane”, etc.. You seriously need to get out more and listen to something else besides your own echo-gallery.

Yeah, you’re projecting when you accuse me of the same. Sorry.

Carrie, in the specific case, there are no books named. Palin didn’t censor anyone. Rather, what was going on at the time is that there was genuine concern over whether real smut (with pictures and play by play action) would be featured on computers and videos that libraries were starting to have at the time.

It’s a legitimate question. I personally think that if my daughters are going to be walking by library computers, then some kind of filtering software ought to be used to reduce the odds that they’re going to see a new Pee Wee Herman enjoying the “literature.” Librarians have too often said that I don’t have that right, and as a taxpayer, I’ve got the right to suggest that the 1st Amendment doesn’t require me to pay for Pee Wee’s entertainment, nor does it require me to pay the salary of those who disagree.

Bubba why are you assuming she wanted to ban “smut”, you are making just as much of an assumption as anyone else that you are accusing of doing the same.

also you seem to focus a very narrow range of items she is accused of. how about the earmarks issue? it seems rather well documented and seems to make her a hypocrite.

Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

Sarah Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

    Bristol is Trig’s Mother

When have I or anyone here said that?

    lied about the plane
you mean she did sell it on eBay then? wait, I’m “confused.”

to echo mindtron (since, apparently, I love them’s echo-chambers), what of the earmarks? what of the $$ from the bridge?

What say you to these two subjects which I specifically asked you about. Again, to echo myself (this echoing is fun!):

The point is not the selling price but the fact that she so easily and eagerly distorts the truth. If you want to defend her, explain the earmarks bullshit; explain the $$ from the bridge to nowhere.

    And on this:

Librarians have too often said that I don’t have that right, and as a taxpayer, I’ve got the right to suggest that the 1st Amendment doesn’t require me to pay for Pee Wee’s entertainment, nor does it require me to pay the salary of those who disagree.

    1) Show me where librarians have said this? I’ve never heard of this.

    2) ugh, last I checked you don’t actually get to dictate where your specific tax dollars go. don’t know if they covered that in that infamous econ 101 class you took… you want to not pay for “smut” as you call it, then don’t buy it. Simple answer. As for taxes – I don’t want my taxes to pay for war, or the collossal defense budget or corporate bailouts, or for earmarks to Alaska, for that matter. But such is the way of the world. This is not to say there aren’t ways of changing how our collective pot is spent, but using that as justification for other things… “eesh don’t sink so.”

Btw, I’m still not clear on exactly what the material was that Palin was trying to ban. Bubba makes it sound as though the library was going to catalog straight up porn. To be clear, by porn I mean that which we normal folk call porn and not something about child-birth or a medical video with live models or pictures of herpes so you know what to go to the doctor about when it itches.

  30. By cjb at 6:54 pm on Sep 9, 2008 | Comment | ReplyReply directly to this specific comment

BB – that dude wasn’t a government employee? How could he be fired by Palin if he wasn’t? It comes down to whether he had a contract or some other expectation of continued employment.

But all of that doesn’t matter because, as with everything, it’s not the crime, it’s the coverup. She already had to completely change a statement she originally made once emails and phone messages came out in the course of the investigation (i.e, she lied yet again). Now after promising to cooperate, she’s refused to give a deposition, as have 7 others close to her. To borrow a line from the Repub play book — if she’s innocent, what is she hiding?

So, you have a defense to her constant lying about the bridge to nowhere (and saying that Obama/Biden didn’t vote to stop the bridge is not a defense of her lying).
