Runnin’

July 15th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 9:21 am in Training, Health, Fitness |

Since my focus for this year is dum cyclocross I have been spending some time off the bike to get my legs ready for harsh treatment.

I have discovered that 200 pounds of human was not built for running. Ankles are stiff, my lower legs have been replaced by daggers that pierce my knees with each step, my hips and lower back are killing me. But with each outing it gets a bit easier.

I run so slow that my GPS unit sometimes thinks that I have stopped.

Hopefully the pain now will help lessen the pain later. Or at least I will slightly faster with the same amount of pain.

We’ll see how last night’s run affects tonight’s Tuff Ride.

Don’t stress the runnin that much. CX is still 95% about strong riding. You don’t need to go out and do 5 mile runs at sub-7 minute pace or anything. I’d say concentrate on doing runups on short hills or running intervals of only a few minutes. Throw in lots of dismounts/remounts to hone those smooth transitions, as that’s where you can screw up and lose contact in a race.

Why is the line so squiggly?

My goal is to build up to the point where I can run for one hour.

Then I will work on running faster than I can ride for one hour.

Then I will work on running faster than I can ride for one hour while carrying my bike.

Then I will work on getting my bike to weigh less than 5 pounds and kick all your asses in every race this year.

It’s because you are an alcoholic. I have been meaning to talk to you about that.

That’s good advice - especially for a bigger runner. I’ve been wearing the super-cushy Asics Nimbus for years. (The Cumulus are almost as good and cheaper.) Keep track of the mileage and switch them out after 500 miles or so.
