More F1

The video of which jkruse mentions:

Entertaining stuff. Most people have no idea how complicated these cars really are.

By the year 2013 all cars racing in the FIA are mandated to be hybrid powered by both rechargeable and fuel sources. Formula One cars will be moving that direction next year with the introduction of a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that will capture energy normally dissipated as heat during braking. This energy will be stored in the car, electrically or mechanically, for use as additional power at the drivers discretion.

For “additonal power” or as alternative power? If it’s “additional” instead of alternative, does that mean that no fuel will actually be conserved?

I watched this clip when the Top Gear episode first came out…and it still makes my heart beat faster. F1 cars put all other machines to shame.

    Prolly.

Conservation is nothing more than a personal virtue.

    “It’s un-American.”
Actually you are correct, now that Toyota has been handing the ‘Big 3′ their lunch.

I’d have to guess (speaking as an engineer) that hybrid race cars will save about as much fuel as….say that hybrid Lexus that gets about the same mileage as my half ton GMC pickup. Most of the energy that fuels them goes into wind and rolling resistance, not brakes…..

….maybe the real reason that they’re doing this is that they need yet another system to break down on the racetrack because the F1 cars are getting too reliable. :^)
