problem of the day

May 23rd, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 8:47 am in Miscellaneous |

There is only one way into my garage, through the garage door.

There is only one way to open the garage door, with the garage door opener remote.

There is an emergency release but it is not hooked up.

The garage door opener is not working.

My bike is inside the garage.

Any ideas other than demolishing the garage door to get inside?

How do I get into these kinds of situations?

Batteries, grasshopper. Have you checked the remote’s batteries?

    Poor planning?

Call the door manufacturer and see if there are additional options for this situation other than employing the emergency release.

When they put you on hold, it’s because they don’t want you to hear them laughing at you.

Also: check your electrical box in your basement. Something may have caused a flippage of the switchage.

Don’t you work for a bike company?

Seems there might be a few extra bikes there…..

I have the same situation and have often wondered what I would do.

I just fixed my garage door last night, actually; the cable came off the track. Thankfully, it was a simple fix that even a clown like myself could do, but my book on home repairs noted that you do well to have someone who knows what he’s doing handle the job. Sorry, but part of your tax “prebate” might need to go to this….

Oh, and for about $100, a Sawzall blade, and some nails, shims and screws, you can get a door from Home Depot (or your other favorite hardware store) and install it, unless you’ve got a masonry garage, and you’ll need a little more effort. I did it last fall, pretty straightforward. A 30″ door will fit nicely between the studs.

(and if you’re going to need to cut vinyl siding, Skil saw (circular) with a plywood blade on backwards…..no kidding, it works gorgeously)

    ditto pcomeau - sawzall….

make a door to go inside the house while you’re at it. :)

    Hahahahahahah.

If you have to hack into the door one thought is to confine the hacking to one panel - then you can just replace that panel (if needed) vs. the whole garage door, or just cover up the hole with a piece of sheetmetal (if it’s a metal door) and re-use. Suggest hacking into the top panel as that is where the connection is to the opener - pull the pin…

Why not just break a window? then replace that. Its the cheapest option so far. Also you might just be able to open the window up and shimmy on in.

Why not just break a window?

I would consider a window a point of entry. There are no windows, just the garage door.

Hanz and Franz could probably lift the whole garage off the foundation and hold it in the air while you enter and retrieve your bicycle.

My garage door opener is named Debbie. I know, I know…

The correct answer was to call the company that I used to install the door and ask them to come get me in. $160 later, problem solved. Tuffy was closest.

I’d still recommend another way in/out of the garage, but I’m sure you know that already. BTW, for a window or door, you also need a permit. Probably talking $200, or $500 - $800 if you have someone else do it. You just need to make sure that the framing is done right.

    Congrats to Tuffy!

sniff I here I hoped the sawzall would be needed.

It’s so much more fun then calling some silly company to do it right.

The correct answer was to call Mrs. Smithers who spent a good part of her morning finding the company who would not sawzall the door. We do now have two nice pilots holes for fishing out the release cord with a coat hanger. We will be patching them up, so no thoughts about breaking into the Smithers’s garage.

BTW we do have a window to the garage, but the previous neighbor thought it would be a great idea to side over it.

Your neighbor put siding over your garage window? What a great prank…..
