pro race tricks o’ the trade

May 8th, 2008 | by Smithers |

John Lieswyn on the Pro Cycling MN Blog:

Without special equipment, follow cars or hoopla I set off to prove my worth. Earplugs in to block the sound of the wind (a mental trick to make you feel faster)…

Earplugs in a TT? I never heard of that.

Anyone?

Did you make that one up John?

I mean, duct tape on the anus, I think everyone knows that TT trick. But earplugs?

I don’t know if I buy that one.

the national champ has been putting cotton in his ears on rides ever since I met him… and he’s a sprinter…

It’s a purely mental trick - you don’t hear the wind in your ears, so you think you’re going faster as if you were in a tailwind. Like those gimmicky helmet strap flaps that were advertised for a while.
