More winter

April 27th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 3:39 pm in Mobile Post |

Snowing here today. I’m hearing people guffaw about “the myth of global warming” and I just roll my eyes. The science is certainly not in on this issue but the reality is that Global Climate Change screws up the weather. Hots are hotter and colds are colder. Our extended winter proves nothing for either camp, one way or the other. For the climate change deniers to point to our current weather and state that the Earth is not warming costs them credibility. Snow only proves that it’s snowing. Using curent weather to deny the possibility of climate change only proves your scientific ignorance.

You are correct. Isolated weather events tell us nothing, even though both sides (mostly in jest on my part) use them to support their position.

As for the higher highs and lower lows, I don’t believe that, at least not yet.

It was Global Warming until scientist started noticing that temps were trending back down, then it became Global Change so as to save face and allow the “crisis” to continue.

When people try and be cute and make a joke about snow in April and global warming, I wait for them to stop giggling and then cool them with a folding chair.

Seriously though, why don’t we make a deal with the naysayers. They can go on denying there’s issue but in return when we are 50 years into a 100 year drought and there is a shortage of clean drinking water, we get first dibs and they get to drink our bathwater. Deal?

Weather never listens to the critics.

I’m no meteorologist, but I have heard a few times that prior to a “global warming” we will likely see a “global cooling.” Sort of like another ice-age.

As for the higher-highs and lower-lows… agreed. That it took something like 8 days longer to reach 60 this year in contrast to last could very well be a fluke. However, as the ice-caps continue to melt, I find it hard to believe that this will not affect the rest of the world. Much of our weather is influenced by the oceans (el Nino/Nina) and much like adding ice to a cup of water brings down the temp of the liquid, the ice migrating away from the poles and closer to main-stream ocean currents will ultimately influence our weather and temperatures through the assumed chain of cause and effect.
