Trouble for McCain

April 23rd, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 4:25 pm in Politics |

It’s very frustrating for me to see the Democratic nomination process continue when it is all but impossible for Hillary to secure the nomination. It’s also frustrating that Barack can’t seem to close the deal regardless of Hillary’s descent into Rovian politics.

But McCain and his supporters should not get too comfortable. Ross Douthat in the Atlantic:

But by all rights, this ought to be a peak time for McCain’s numbers - not the peak, necessarily, but certainly a high point. His right-wing critics are making nice with him, his favorable ratings are sky-high, and his opponents are too busy driving each other’s negative ratings upward to spend any time (or money, more importantly) putting a dent in his halo. Moreoever, the Democrats’ intra-party tensions are bound to diminish once the party picks a nominee: At least some of the Hillary supporters who tell pollsters that they’d vote for McCain over Obama may actually follow through on that pledge, but a lot of today’s McCainocrats will come home to the Democratic fold when all is said and done.

Yet even with all this going for him, McCain’s poll numbers are bumping up against the same 45 percent ceiling that they’ve been hitting since December. If the election were held today - a pretty good day for McCain, all things considered - he’d probably lose to Obama, and might lose to Clinton as well. That doesn’t mean he will lose, by any stretch, but it certainly doesn’t bode well for November.

Douthat does not even take into account the Iraq War and the economy, both of which could be far worse in November than they are today.

I think he’s going to get thumped.

With the Dems suffering through this cat fight, the press is indulging in the ‘race’ question. Today’s Star Trib has a self serving piece on whether white women and men will vote for an African American presidential candidate, as if that is the only thing that would determine the voter’s choice. Any piece of the puzzle, taken out of context can look exotic. The media needs to get a higher standard. Plus, I’m so tired of all the typos in our ‘new’ daily newspaper, including headline typos. It reads like a middle school newsletter.

I’m not sure which candidate will be the best President from a comedic standpoint. McCain has possibilities. Iraq? Don’t worry about Iraq, we’ll be there for another 5? 7? 10? Do I hear 12 in the back of the room?

McCain is such the old tired Republican re-tread and a totaly wanker to boot. Running on an endless war, shite economy, etc. What more do the Dems need?

If either of the those two can’t beat him, the Dems should close up shop….start over. Seriously, get beat twice by someone who can hardly formulate a cogent thought. Only to follow it up by getting beat by a boarderline psycho.

    We’re doomed.

It’s too bad that the Republicans couldn’t have put up an even more despicable candidate like Huckabee, because it’s hard for me to really root against McCain.

Although I’d never vote for the guy, I’d say McCain is one of the more respectable bad guys. I hope his loss in November doesn’t hurt his already shaky standing among conservatives. The more he can edge them towards decency the better, IMO.
