Stupid

April 14th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 7:50 am in Politics |

Vice President Dick Cheney interviewed on the Sean Hannity show, April 10 2008:

For us to walk away from Iraq I think would have at least that bad an effect, probably worse, because if al Qaeda were to take over big parts of Iraq, among other things, they would acquire control of a significant oil resource. Iraq has almost 100 billion barrel reserves, producing 2.5-3 million barrels of oil a day. If you take a terrorist organization like al Qaeda and give it that kind of revenue, there’s no telling the amount of trouble they could get into.

This is unbelievably stupid. So stupid in fact that I am not even going to comment on it other than to say that if you don’t understand how stupid it really is then you don’t understand what is going on in Iraq and you should just disqualify yourself from all future comment on the matter.

I don’t know anything about oil, but al Qaeda has set up one of those ink-jet refill kiosks at our local mall. The geopolitical ramifications are troubling, but it’s such a good deal that I can’t not do business with them.

    Here’s how I read Cheney’s quote:

For us to walk away from Iraq I think would have at least that bad an effect, probably worse, because if the Boogie Man were to take over big parts of Iraq, among other things, they would acquire control of a significant oil resource. Iraq has almost 100 billion barrel reserves, producing 2.5-3 million barrels of oil a day. If you take a terrorist like the Boogie Man and give it that kind of revenue, there’s no telling the amount of trouble they could get into.

    Stupid enough to be “stoopid”?
    I think so.

Smithers, if Al-Qaida represents no threat to Iraq, exactly why are our Marines helping them assume room temperature every day there?

Nice personal attack on those who disagree with you, but there are hundreds of thousands of infantrymen who have personal experience that would suggest that Bin Laden’s movement could very well be a threat to that nation.

    Bike Bubba,

Please explain to me how a fragmented, clandestine, non-Iraqi terrorist organization could produce and sell Iraqi oil on the global market, especially when the majority of Iraqis have turned against al-Qaida. Could you describe to me even a remotely a plausible scenario?

Or do you just want to go back and admit that Cheney’s comment was asinine?

I can imagine Osama bin Laden’s face on one of those giant plastic coffee mugs you get for 69 cents with a fill-up.

Yes, Smithers, Al-Qaida does appear to be on the ropes due to the good efforts of our Marines. Shall we expect the left side of the aisle to start admitting this?

    No? Why not?

And even though they appear to be on the ropes, bigger underdogs have come back than Al-Qaida. So no, McCain’s statement isn’t asinine at all, but is rather a sober understanding that things can change.

And you want a Muslim group successfully marketing a commodity? Um, maybe you look a little bit east from Iraq at a nation called “Iran,” or maybe the Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia, or possibly the KLA becoming heroin vendor to western Europe?

    dood, seriously?
It’s been how many years and we haven’t caught bin Laden?
What’s the ratio of U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq vs. Afganistan?
4000+ service men and women have died in Iraq for what?

I can agree with those who believe that we must now focus on the situation at hand and sort out how we ought to move forward, but let’s not muddy the past. Private interests (Bush, Cheney & Co.’s intersts) are behind the quote in question; Cheney is more worried about his own not getting their share rather than the oil (and hence the cheddar) getting into the hands of terrorists.

The unfortunate thing is that many of those trying to use the military to advance their lots in life are caught up in a privateer’s war. Adding insult to serious injury, many (perhaps yourself included?) use our military as both excuse and reasoning for the continuing war in Iraq.

Finally, I think you’re mistakenly equating “terrorist group” with “Muslim group.”

I guess it depends upon which “Al-Qaida” you are talking about.

Are you talking about the “Al-Qaida” on the Afghan/Paki border that everyone acknowledges has gotten stronger or the “Al-Qaida in Iraq” that everyone except those in the Bush Administration states has never been a significant part of the violence in Iraq?

And you want a Muslim group successfully marketing a commodity?

You failed to understand my question.

Al-Qaida is a Suuni group made up of non-Iraqi’s. How could this small unorganized group take over oil production and revenue from a predominantly Shi’a population and who would buy oil from Al-Qaida anyway?

    It’s a total BS scenario.
