Vote for him

March 28th, 2008 | Posted by Smithers at 7:42 am in Politics |

the (dis) pencer wants your vote. He lists his platform, let’s analyze it:

1. A National Health Care - I just can’t get on board the idea of a nationalized health care system. I really think that the free market can come up with a method to provide health care in this country that is efficient for the consumer and profitable for the providers. However, I am strongly in favor of government regulation that dictates what minimum heath care coverage at what maximum price has to be offered to all citizens before a provider is permitted to offer service.

2. A useful rail system - Here here.

3. Bigger states, smaller laws - I can’t see it. Whether or not his idea has merit it rejects one of the fundamental principals in the founding of this country. Thomas Jefferson never considered himself a citizen of the United States first and foremost. He believed that his country was Virginia. States autonomy from the republic was the founders idea. The civil war, federal legislation and various Supreme Court decisions that followed have reduced the power of the states versus the federal government. You want to give some of this power back to the states? Sure, it’s what was meant to be in the first place.

4. Abolish the presidency - Again, a fundamental principal of our government from the start. You want to roll back some of the power grab from the Bush Administration? I am all for that.

5. Gun control - all for it. We will never outlaw guns in this country but limiting access to certain guns and knowing who owns guns should be a no brainer.

(dis) writes further:

once everything is up and running, then the timeline will call for abolishing the government entirely, we won’t need it. everyone will be pretty happy, and it’ll be smoooove sailing.

Hummm…I would have to see it to believe it.

Would you want the free enterprise system to take over police protection, fire protection, as well? Don’t we all deserve health protection as much?

Sure we deserve it, but I think this is an area that can be successfully addressed by the private market using government regulation.

In regards to police, government makes the law so it can only be expected that government carry out the enforcement of the law.

I don’t see fire prevention and investigation being a profitable enterprise for the markets so I thing that should remain a government responsibility.

thanks for the dissection of my platform. when i win if you don’t love it, you can leave it. :)

    oh, regarding police;
no sidearms for them either. only batons like the japanese police.
and they would be run like the fire dept., i.e. they would only come when called.

no patroling, no profiling, no quotas.
you have an issue, you call the cops and they come.
and in a timely manner no less, b/c they aren’t screwing our money away harassing poor people, and people of color.

    i’ve got all the answers.

yea, I was wondering how long it would take to get a word from you. Next step would have been live blogging my attempt to get you to comment. No need for that now.

I’m not sure a homogeneous society like Japan is the best example, but don’t the British cops go without sidearms? It can be done.

Maybe pulling the cops out of problem areas would force those who live in those areas to invest a bit more to solve their own problems.

Hummmm…sounds like my argument for Iraq.
