RADIUS event questions

December 18th, 2007 | Posted by Smithers at 2:36 pm in Local Cycling |

So, as we look forward to 2008, I am working on formulating the RADIUS series details for the next racing season. I have a few questions for those who wish to take part as racers or spectators.

Afternoon or evening events?

Friday night or Saturday?

More sprint events or more endurance events?

More two person team events or individual events?

More prize money or who cares?

How many races per category? Three enough? Six too much?

Conflict with road events or look for open dates on the calendar?

I’d be more likely to spectate Fridays after work than making a special trip out on Saturday.

    -Afternoon
-Saturday. You’ll have a hard time getting people to race Thursday and Friday.
    -Sprint
    -Team
    -Who Cares
    -4-5
    -Don’t Care

Saturday afternoon? WTF? If you are worried about spectators at all, a Saturday afternoon will have a zero to low attendance turnout. I’d suggest a night, any of the weekend nights friday/sat/sun would work. Need Beer and lots of it and a mixture of events, not just sprint or endurance specific, and definitely fuck cross…

Oddly, one of the largest turnouts for a velodrome event was the cross race this year, but I wouldn’t schedule a Sat or Sun anyway. I like the evening events.

i was kiddin ’bout cross. it was frustrating to have 3 (or more?) rainouts with no rescheduling.. and the weather seems to cooperate a little more in sept and early oct. if something later was scheduled it may provide for a little late season motivation.

My concern in regards to scheduling events past the final Thursday night event, is the turn out. Will track riders continue to attend events at the velodrome past the last Thursday night race?

I proposed a mid-September event at the track meeting and everyone laughed at me.

weather permiting i think so.. the late season is a transition phase.. i’m guessing it may be good.. especially if there’s incentive (not $$ but beer, food music etc).. throw a little cross flare into a late track race, hope for good weather and i’m guessing it could be great. at a minimum have a make up night late in the season so if you get a rainout theere’s the chance to make up for it.. if it’s not needed then maybe the demand will still exist.. if not don’t do it. if it’s at least booked on the calendar it won’t be a mental shock at the end of the season.. plus you have natz which tends to be so late.

Crit race in the morning around the parking lot

    Cross race in afternoon

    Track at night

Set it up so 10 min between all races. run multiple races at the same time like masters and juniors for crit and cross. Follow normal race night for track. Omnium points points for all.

other than that for your ?’s

Sprint races in the afternoon with only two or three races friday nights. Rather than prize money just have people click on the ads on my blog.

    I second Ped’s motion…

and agree with Timmer, cx and track race? definitey loony bin…

I still think that you’ll have a light turnout if you hold an event after the last Thursday night. Every year after school starts we have a drop in track racers, if my memory serves me, even this year after the last THursday night, most everybody I talked to was ready for the season to be over…

Early Sunday morning with mass being held in the infield and beer in the outfield. Dunk tank in main parking lot. Dog show in Kohl’s parking lot. Cat 6 checks all id’s and pays off the priest. Oops, no priest payoff…we’re in Minnesota, not Chicago.

If you want a real circus team event, buy this and have everyone take turns doing tandem flying 200’s on it….
