Ask the readers…

A loyal fan writes in:

The tragic shootings this past weekend in Colorado at the churches were stopped in the process by a Church security guard, a former Minneapolis cop nonetheless–coupling that with a Minnesotan (sic) killed an (sic) eery (sic) Minnesota connection to these deaths.

My question is this, why is there an armed security guard in a church? My church is the last place you will find someone with a gun. I just think it is strange to have an armed security guard at a place of worship. Am I the only one?

What say you readers?

An armed security guard at a church is weird, but a fired cop who has found Jesus and is a bodyguard for the pastor may be a little over the top. The right wing nuts are calling for arming all churches and sports venues. A call to action?
She also stated that she had heard about the previous shootings, so I’m thinking she was ready. This is gonna be a hot item for awhlie.

On NPR they reported that she was fired from a job in Minneapolis. I don’t remember the details, but it wasn’t a major infraction anyway.

The church has had its share of controversy, so it’s not surprising that they have heightened security. Besides, it’s Colorado Springs….there’s bound to be megachurch/militia crossover.

Because of the earlier shooting, the church had upped its security.

The guard is a complete loon. She emptied the magazine to kill a lone gunman (apparently God is a prankster, and wanted some drama), and police aren’t commenting whether she delivered the fatal shot, or if the shooter died of a self-inflicted wound.

I think the better question is, why are Minnesotans so screwed up?

I personally find it hard to believe a gun inside of church. Granted I am catholic (oh the horror), but a gun inside a church of Drunken Irish seems a little hard to believe.

I’m not commenting on her sanity, only your basis for determining it. “She emptied the magazine to kill a lone gunman”. How many times have you been in a gunfight? I’m assuming even “rational” people would do some pretty crazy shit when confronting a gunman.

I would probably empty the entire clip and then throw a flower pot at the guy. just to make sure he was dead.

Yeah, I think if I were the only armed person amongst an otherwise unarmed congregation, I’d empty the magazine before I let the guy continue shooting. I don’t think the woman’s Christian faith has anything to do with that.

Having an armed guard inside a church isn’t limited to right-wing Protestants. It’s not unusual for Jewish temples to hire armed security during the High Holidays, for example.

I can only speak for myself.

    Less than once.

why didn’t someone lob the holy hand gernade at him?

god loves guns. at least it would seem so. killing people in the name of god is what mankind does best.

although, if some complete loon starts shooting up where ever i’m at, i hope there’s another complete loon there to gun them down.

or at least super rookie figure to throw a flower pot in their general direction.

No time to consult the Book of Armaments, Chapter 2, versus 9 to 21.

They stated on the news that she was the pastor/preacher/minsters personal security guard. Weird.

Well, have you seen the size of that place?
    HUGE!
They have more security guards, but they did nothing, she did something:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22198709/

I would NOT expect security guards at a
5000 sq ft church……but this is one big place.
    Not your average Minnesota church.

That’s one of those mega-churches. I’ve seen them. The Wal-Mart of bible belt churches. They’re run like a Wal-Mart in many ways too, with big budgets, music departments bigger than many universities, etc. Mass-market religion.

    That’s one of those mega-churches.

Specifically, the one that Ted Haggard was the pastor of before he was outed last year.

There’s a little something for everybody, I guess. For me it comes down to the fact that that the former North Side (Minneapolis) cop couldn’t fell him, and would not have been able to stop a more determined killer. As for emptying the magazine, the thought might be, especially with police training, that your last one or two rounds would be more wisely spent on a better shot, or emergency defense as you approach the subject:

“The death of Matthew Murray has been ruled a suicide,” police say in a press release. “It should be noted that he was struck multiple times by the security officer which put him down. He then fired a single round killing himself.”

“although, if some complete loon starts shooting up where ever i’m at, i hope there’s another complete loon there to gun them down.”

you guys keep on calling these people “complete loon’s”. Last I checked they weren’t even on our team, so they can’t even be incomplete loons! Your scenario could only be true if a complete loon (stater) like Donimater would start shooting the place up and having another complete loon (stater) like Cullen there to gun him down….

donimater got worked by Mean Dawg, so I doubt that he would have the gall to go after cullen!

    I eat loons for dinner.

of course we’re talking about a church founded by a crack head with a hooker fetish, so of course there’s gonna be guns.

Ted Haggard is no Mother Theresa. He’s more like Andrew Cunanan who also has a Minnesota connection. I was actually surprised the shooter wasn’t Ted, or was it? I’ve been offline.

Why armed security? For the same reason that police carry guns, and the same reason that most schools (and even many businesses) have armed security. Because there are people out there who are willing to injure or kill people we love, and it’s not exactly “loving your neighbor” to simply allow them to do so.
