Question

December 7th, 2007 | Posted by Smithers at 3:12 pm in Mobile Post |

Can someone be reliability undependable? If you know someone that you can not depend upon does that mean that you can never depend upon them or do they sometimes come through and give you enough hope to be an even bigger let down next time?
There are some people that you don’t bother asking for help because you know they won’t show. There are others that you ask for help and they may or may not show, but you keep asking anyway and when they don’t show you are continually disappointed. This would be called unreliably undependable.
That’s what I strive to be.

In the software industry, the “sales” term for a shitty app is “reliable”. It will reliably give you shitty results.

My new phone has a 400×240 pixel display. That’s a WQVGA resolution in industry parlance, but exactly what’s wide about that quarter-VGA screen when it’s three inches across?

I’m a fan of little giant designations. My new phone will have a 400×240 screen, or a wide quarter-VGA display in industry parlance. There’s nothing particularly wide about a three inch wide screen, orjumbo about shrimp of roughly the same size. Then there’s microSD HC, the stuff you turn to when a paper-thin memory card half the size of your pinky is too small, and full pinky nail size is just too big….

I also like a good snark at a local shop/team on VeloNews

I like to think of one variant as “unreliably predictable” - that’s where the person is consistent, yet useless. You always know what/where/how they are going to be, but it still does no one any good. They get points for attendance and filling in all the bubbles on the test, but the answers aren’t right. (future careers: elementary school teacher, MacArthur Fellowship winner or bureaucrat)

And then there’s “unpredictably reliable” - where you never know quite what they are going to. Might show up late or not even show up, but they take these massive pulls at the front or throw themselves on the grenade. Produce genius insights in class, but no idea whether they’re going to show up sober, or showered, or clothed. (future careers: serial entrepreneur, Nobel Prize winner, or Unabomber)
