Iran

Fareed Zakaria:

Iran has an economy the size of Finland’s and an annual defense budget of around $4.8 billion. It has not invaded a country since the late 18th century. The United States has a GDP that is 68 times larger and defense expenditures that are 110 times greater. Israel and every Arab country (except Syria and Iraq) are quietly or actively allied against Iran. And yet we are to believe that Tehran is about to overturn the international system and replace it with an Islamo-fascist order? What planet are we on?

No shit. If the President of Finland was rattling his saber would we be so wound up about it? I doubt it.

But then Finland is not full of scary Muslims!

I’m not saying that Iran is completely without threat, but let’s keep things in perspective here. We’ve already found ourselves bogged down in one middle east disaster, let’s resist the urge to double down.

Iran’s not technically full of scary Muslims, either.

Think I’d rather invade Iran than Finland… those Finns are tough. Remember what they did to the Russians? I guess they learned paratrooping is not as impressive when there’s eight feet of snow… the farm just goes out and shoots you in the hole you made on landing.

And speaking of sabre rattling, what about all the rattling Russia’s doing these days? All those military flights over Finland, Norway, Britain… I think that’s what Iran is about, plus the Upside of WW III… the end times/rapture.

    Cold War 2.0

Are we sure GDP is the metric we want to be looking at here? Or even %of GDP spent on the military. If that’s the case, we should nuke the shit out of China tomorrow.

Whoa… the article was fairly well written, but this paragraph is full of holes. The defense budget argument is poor - there is a consensus that invading Afghanistan was a good idea, did it have anything to do with their budget? Plus, the idea that Israel is allied with any Arab country is pretty humorous. Keep the threat in prespective, but don’t use poor arguments to do so.

Although, you have a point about the scary Muslims part. Most Iranians are peaceful people. It’s the idea that muslim = terrorist the most flawed.

i agree with monty p. that whole comparison is bogus. iran isn’t that big of a threat, but not for any of the reasons listed there.
