Meh. I am ambivalent on the lead. I mean it wasn’t too long ago that kids were playing with lead toy soldiers.

I am a paranoid bastard. I’d get a lead test kit and test everything the kid touches. It’s just not enough to trust the toy companies.

I am amazed by how many parents I talk with at where I work that have no idea about the lead problem and don’t seem to care.

Even the guys who make the trains don’t seem to get it. They sent out complimentary trains to everyone who complied with the recall and a number of these gifts turned out to be lead based and were recalled.

I had a lead test done on Toddler Smithers the very day I heard about the recall.

I hope the test went well. I don’t think it’s as bad as it could be… well unless you have a lot of Mattel stock. But still, as my mother always said, “Paranoia is awareness.”

It’s not like the government is testing toys. That recall was purely due to internal company testing. And even if Mattel is effective in selling only lead based toy it doesn’t mean the pirate Mattel toy on the shelves at the local store is safe.

Swabs to do lead tests are pretty cheap. And even if a toy has lead paint doesn’t mean it’s going to get into you or your kid.

People sweat about all these bad things in the environment and food and everywhere, yet humans seem to be living longer now more than ever. It calls to mind advice Eddy B. had for some healthfood nut… “you have to be able to eat anything.”
