Sorry…

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

A number of you have sent me e-mails over the past couple of weeks that I have not responded to. I apologize. What with the trade show and traveling and work and taking care of little babies I have been a bit distracted and behind.

I’ll catch up next week and answer all your questions about life, the universe and everything.

Promise.

Is it a phone or is it a computer? Apple has apparently decided that the iPhone is a phone, not a computer.

One of the things that I have enjoyed most about the various smartphones and pocket PC phones that I have used is their ability for total customization. I can add software, remove software, change the settings, unlock the phone and use it with a pre-paid SIM card when traveling. Lots of options.

No such options with the iPhone.

Apple made a deal to lock up all iPhone sold in the United States so that they can only be used with AT&T. Feel free to purchase an iPhone without a service plan from AT&T, just don’t plan on using it as a phone.

Industrious hackers, wishing to take advantage of the innovative iPhone features but not wanting to use AT&T, have developed software to unlock the phone so that it could be used with other GSM carriers such as T-Mobile. These hackers have also opened up the phone operating system to allow non-Apple programs to be run on the iPhone. So far so good.

Last week Apple released a firmware update to the iPhone which was automatically downloaded to the phone. Following the download iPhone users who had installed non-Apple software discovered that this software no longer worked. iPhone users who were using software to allow them the use of a carrier other than AT&T found that their phones no longer worked at all regardless of the carrier SIM card. Totally screwed.

Apple is onto something with their touch screen technology and their software for handling voice messages. But, if Apple continued to treat their consumer base like a bunch of douchebags it is just going to open the door even wider for an iPhone competitor to get established.

As a matter of fact, HTC is approaching one million units sold of their Touch phone. This nearly meets the same sales figures that Apple reached with their iPhone, but with much less publicity. Total compatibly with Miscrosoft since it runs Windows Mobile software, total compatibility with any GSM network, easy to install after market software, cheaper than an iPhone. No contest as far as I am concerned.
