Which would you rather see, Carrot Top or Fantasy Chicks?
I have to believe that Carrot Top would be the unanimous choice? That dude is funny right?
I’ve arrived in Vegas.

From Erik Larson’s Thunderstruck:
“Overseeing this changing empire was Queen Victoria. In 1896 she celebrated her seventy-seventh birthday. She had reigned for nearly sixty years, during which the empire had grown to be the biggest and most powerful ever known. Meanwhile she herself had grown frail. For over three decades she had lived in a state of perpetual mourning over the death in 1861 of her husband. Ever since then, the Widow of Windsor had worn only black satin. She kept a cast of his hand by her bedside, so that she could hold it when she needed comfort.”
The most powerful woman on earth at the time, seeking support from a plaster hand, all she had left of her hearts love.

It was a bit of a gamble coming down to the Gulf Coast this time of year. During Hurricane season the weather can either be very good or very very bad There was supposed to be a tropical storm causing some problems down here now but, as you can see, the weather is beautiful. Fingers crossed for the trip back next weekend. Hopefully nothing wll blow up in the Gulf this week and cause me difficulties.
Vegas bound.

I watched two motor racing movies last week.
The first was Grand Prix from 1966. Following four Formula One drivers through a racing season, the movie was full of the obligatory and overdrawn personal drama that was common in 1950’s and 1960’s movies. But the cinematography of the racing scenes are really what makes the movie worthwhile. Check out the in car shots from the Monaco race which were quite innovative in its time.
Despite taking a swim in Monaco harbor, James Garner would actually take up auto racing following the filming of this movie.

Monza Sopraelevata
One of the most amazing parts of the film is the final race sequence filmed on the Monza Oval race course. Built in 1955, the Sopraelevata heavily banked, high speed track had been used by the Formula One circuit in the mid-1950’s and early 1960’s but had not been used by F1 in 5 years when Grand Prix was filmed. But the image of racing on the banking was too spectacular to pass up and so it was included in the film.
It’s unfortunate that the high speed track sits deteriorating, unused and overgrown by trees, in the country side of the Italian Lombardy.
The second film was the 2005 documentary Dust to Glory. Directed by Dana Brown, who is better known for surfing movies (that I can’t get enough of), Dust to Glory covers the famous Baja 1000 off-road race from Tijuana to La Paz Mexico.
Using the same camera techniques, cinematography, soundtrack and profiles employed in the surf movies, Brown made a riveting film about an event that I would not have normally given a crap about. Plus James Garner is in this movie too.
