Polar Bears have bad attitudes

AP:

Two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will be killed off by 2050 — and the entire population gone from Alaska — because of thinning sea ice from global warming in the Arctic, government scientists forecast Friday.

Stupid polar bears. Don’t they know global warming does not exist?

You ever notice how when it gets a little warm in the winter everyone gets out and breaks up the ice on their driveway? I mean you don’t have to break it all, just make a few choice paths and the ice is gone with one sunny day.

Global warming or no, this is what is happening to the arctic ice. The run ice breakers all over the place up there 24/7. There’s even regular tourist runs to the North Pole were they can look on in amazement at the open water left by the previous tourist ship and wave their fists with indignity at global warming. Yet I have never heard anyone say “hey, we should regulate this shit about wholesale breaking up the ice shelf”.

We may not be able to convince everyone about the threats of greenhouse gases. And even if we can it’s going to be hard to reduce them, especially once China adapts to driving cars fueled by leaded gas and poor emission standards.

But if the ice breakers were stopped, or at least kept to designated routes, I think it could go a far way in keeping the ice shelf. And now that the Polar Bear is on the endangered list there is the legislative power to do this, at least in the small portion of the Arctic that is Alaska.

I would need to see some science on this. You are equating asphalt with ocean water.

It’s pretty basic science. Ocean water is warmer than sea ice. Also, sea ice tends to be white and reflect heat whereas ocean water is dark tends to absorb heat.

Large pieces of ice are harder to melt than small ones. Break ice into smaller chunks and it’s easier to melt.

Large pieces of sea ice tend to stay cold and cool the air above it.

Basically what ice breaking does is the old roman tactic of divide and conquer.

Here’s an experiment, just to be scientific.

Run an ice breaker across Lake Harriet. Crisscross and open up a forty foot wide swath in midwinter and keep it open.

Will it be open water before an unbroken similar sized lake such as Cedar?

I would be willing to wager it would be open water weeks ahead of it’s normal time gaged by historic record and before Cedar.

Ice on top of water is held together by surface tension. Break that and it’s like ripping an umbrella or balloon. A small fissure causes it to rip apart.

Find an ice breaker this fall and let’s try it out on Harriet this winter.

I’ll see if I can borrow one from my uncle in Coppermine… though I am not sure how we’ll get it inland. Gotta boat trailer?
