Chron.com:
Korean War veteran Nyles Reed, 75, opened an envelope last week to learn a Purple Heart had been approved for injuries he sustained as a Marine on June 22, 1952.
But there was no medal. Just a certificate and a form stating that the medal was “out of stock.”
The form letter from the Navy Personnel Command told Reed he could wait 90 days and resubmit an application, or buy his own medal.
After waiting 55 years, however, Reed decided to pay $42 for his own Purple Heart and accompanying ribbon — plus state sales taxes — at a military surplus store.
For being the greatest country in the world the United States can sure be pretty pathetic sometimes.
Why on earth would the military be “out of stock” on Purple Hearts? I wonder…

Ped joined me for velo nacht. It’s always awesome to have a team mate at the races.
The first two races were pretty much a bust for me and it was looking like the third race was going to be more of the same.
An 80 lap points race is a tough slog and my goal was to stay in the race no matter how many laps I lost. The race started out fast and I felt like hell, but the longer the race went on the better I felt.
I was able to shut down numerous gaps, chase down a break by a couple of Ten ‘n Chairs Squad guys, make a play for the final points sprint and stay even on laps compared to the field.
It must have been all my residual fitness.
I guess some dudes were watching me in the Super Sprint to see me execute the super secret Miss and Out strategy, but I did not have the legs for the short stuff last night.
I’ll be missing the next two Thursdays of racing but I’m looking forward to the final RADIUS event and I am stoked for next year. I got a commitment from Ped to race the madison with me in ‘08.
You all gonna get smacked with our pimp cane one way or another.

I saw R.T. Rybak at our local grocery store earlier this week. I introduced myself and shook his hand.
He looked really tired.
