How will we know if the surge in Iraq is successful? The White House will tell us!
Despite Bush’s repeated statements that the report will reflect evaluations by Petraeus and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, administration officials said it would actually be written by the White House, with inputs from officials throughout the government.
And though Petraeus and Crocker will present their recommendations on Capitol Hill, legislation passed by Congress leaves it to the president to decide how to interpret the report’s data.
Anyone care to guess what the White House report on the surge will declare?
Will it be rated a success, a tremendous success or an unimaginable success?
The reality is that the surge is a failure. While the troops have had some success in tapping down the violence in some areas of Iraq, particularly Ramadi, the entire goal of the surge was to suppress violence enough to give Iraqi politicians room to negotiate their political differences. However, since the surge began there has been no success on the Iraqi political front and there is no sign that things will change anytime soon.
Nearly 700 US soldiers have been killed since the first of the year.
What a waste.
