Every year, more trees go down in the name of containing Dutch Elm, and the next year, a few more.

When you lose an tree to DED, what is there to replace it? In both the abstract and in practice, the answer appears to be nothing. You can’t add disease resistance to the tree without losing one or more of the elm’s other desirable qualities, and when the city cuts ‘em down, they are rarely replaced by so much as sparse, spindly gingko trees. Every one of these old elms we lose is that much less canopy and majesty for the neighborhood.

These trees are not a natural occurrence, the city planted them on purpose.

It’s not normal for all these elms to be so close to each other so it’s only normal that nature would come up with a way to thin them out.

It’s unfortunate, but only for humans.

Of course they’re planted on purpose, but they are good at what they do.
