The President and the School Bus Hero

August 6th, 2007 | Posted by Smithers at 3:37 pm in News |

Jeremy Hernandez leaves the Interstate 35W bridge after he helped rescue youngsters from a school bus after the bridge collapsed last Wednesday.

Gary Babineau, 24, of Blaine, Minn., who was on the Interstate 35W bridge, rear, that collapsed over the Mississippi River and helped schoolchildren from their bus to safety.

Two guys that stepped up when they were needed.

Guess which one President Bush decided to make the photo op with?

“Bring on the surburbian white boy!”

Oh well, Hernandez got some good news today. Strib:

Hernandez said that he was working as a youth worker at Waite House after he’d been forced to drop out of Dunwoody for lack of money. The school’s tuition and fees typically run $15,000 annually.

If [he] wants to resume learning auto mechanics at Dunwoody College of Technology, he can do so without charge.

The Minneapolis school made that offer to Hernandez’s family Saturday.

Nice to know that Hernandez is getting some recognition for his heroism.

I just hope that someday it comes out that Hernandez was, in fact, offered a meet/greet/photo op with Bush but instead told him to go f&#! himself.

Gary Whatever from Blaine just got used.

my sources report that he was “asked”, told he would be picked up anywhere in the metro.

    he said he’d rather not.

they persisted, saying they knew where he lived and worked, or could pick him up anywhere.
he actually left town to hide out so they would stop harassing him.

so they went with their #2 pick.

Dis had better not be pulling our leg. I’m gonna have to go with Tuffy again and say my first thought was how awesome it would be if he passed on the opportunity.

I thought about being a sign holder on Saturday, but however responsible he may be for the loss of even more American lives between then and Wednesday, because of his rush to war in Iraq, that was not the time to do it.

    i spit the facts man.

rumors and lies are for mainstream media and super-rookie.com.

unlike 99.9% of the world, i had heard of the waite house BEFORE the infamous bus.

i have met some of those kids before the bridge fell.

does bravery, grace under pressure or superhero-ness actually rub off? Is it contagious? Can one actually contract the symptoms just by standing next to the afflicted?

Hernandez had a choice between the Prez and Soledad O’Brien.

    Hmmm, tough decision.

I’m for that brave guy. I wouldn’t shake that loser’s hand either.
Many more people should have his guts.

According to the NYTimes, Tuffy’s hunch on Jeremy Hernandez was correct.

“When President Bush’s staff contacted him to request a photo opportunity, “He was just, like, ‘Nope,’ ” she said.”
