The fool’s run

Friday, July 27th, 2007

finger-ball_edited.jpgAll this talk about cyclocross (obviously designed to inflame) has me thinking about running. Specifically, that I haven’t been (I only run Fall/Winter) and that I want to start soon. As soon as the humidity’s gone.

The way this always works is I strap on the running shoes, start jogging slowly but feel great. I have cardio fitness. I run faster. I run far. Somewhere around a couple miles I notice that my thighs are feeling sore as I run. Guess it’s a little late to back off now, eh? Now I know I’m going to be sore for 4 days or so. Next time I ride I’ll feel like junk, too.

The first run is called the fool’s run. Fit from cycling, run too hard, pay big time.

Running and riding don’t mix, right? WRONG!!!!!! I just need to tough it out and acclimate. CYCLOCROSS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Evans

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Cadel took 2:43 out of Contador in the 40.7km time trial at this years Dauphiné Libéré. Contador cut that margin in half in the first time trial of this years Tour. Evans will beat Contador tomorrow. Will he put enough time into him to take over the jersey?
I’ve bet on it! Should make for an exciting day of racing and I think a win by an acknowledged clean rider like Evans can salvage this Tour de France.

A real Smithers blog post

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Smithers is always blogging about his day. This is what his day’s really like:

7:45 a.m. - Wake up. Can’t think of anything to blog about. Should I mention Mrs. Smithers’ snoring again?

8:15 a.m. - Second bowl of cereal, still nothing to blog about. Read a couple of cycling news sites, then blogs like Skimpy or Snookie looking for ideas. Change a diaper, inspect for bloggable content.

9:00 a.m. - Is it too early for pumpkin loaf? Still no blog idea. Read work email, maybe something I can lift from there. Read a couple more blogs, post a one-liner. Whew, monkey off my back for awhile.

9:30 a.m. - On my way to Starbucks, should I mobile-post about that jerk who cut me off on my 1/2 mile drive to get pumpkin loaf? Remember to weigh-in at home.

10 a.m. - No pumpkin loaf, had to eat a muffin instead. Mobile-posted the tabletop carnage. Can I get a ride in today? Wonder what people at the office are doing right now…should I blog about that?

11 a.m. - Email from ScottERob. Why does he always ask me these questions? Try to be nice in reply…Whoa, look at the inbox, I’ve got a lot of work to do, I need to get on it.

12 noon - Billy D wants to ride at 2pm. Does he work? No way, I’m too busy. Let’s see, 2 or 3 hot dogs for lunch?

1 p.m. - This guy at Nashbar won’t mind if I blog while we talk on the phone. How many? For how much? Got a sweet post half-written but now I have to document this order. Should I feel guilty reading wonkette? Reminder to self: read Ped forwarded article about life-hacking.

3 p.m. - Post entry about music I listened to in high school while skiing with snoring Mrs Smithers before Toddler Smithers made me so happy about getting out of Iraq and winning Masters Track.

5 p.m. - What’s for dinner, Toddler Smithers? How can I make people behave on the Urthel ride?

7 p.m. - Big trouble brewing on the MCF board, I better weigh in…

7:30 p.m. - Nice night for a walk - what part of this can I mobile-post about?

9 p.m. - Dessert! and bed.

Rasmussen - Tour Pool

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

So, does Rasmussen still get credit for winning stage 16 even though he’s out of the Tour? I think he does since it was not the Tour that kicked him out. Thus, I think those of you that picked Rasmussen to win stage 16 still get the points.

Tour Pool updated.

Remember what I said in the rules for this pool:

In the result of the 2007 Tour de France turning into a farce it will only be appropriate the the Smithers MINNEAPOLIS 2007 Tour de France pool also be turned into a farce. You have been warned!

Rasmussen expelled by sponsor

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

From CBS5.com

The expulsion, which Bergsma said was ordered by the Dutch team sponsor…

According to this AP story, the Rabobank DS and the Tour director knew that Rasmussen lied about his whereabouts for out-of-competition testing. And it took the sponsor to expell him?

In other news, Moreni isn’t asking for a B sample test.

I know it’s killing Smithers that he doesn’t get to blog during the Tour flameout.

Reality-based Tour pool update

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

None of us picked Moreni, so I’ll slide the picks along to the next rider dope-controlled out of the tour. I really think one of our picks will be caught.

Next question: Will the Tour make it to Sunday?
