How to create 1.3 billion terrorists

July 31st, 2007 | Posted by Smithers at 8:51 pm in Politics |

Tom Tancredo, Colorado Congressman and GOP Presidential Candidate. Here is his plan to stop further terrorist attacks on the United States:

If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina. That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. If I am wrong fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent or you will find an attack. There is no other way around it. There have to be negative consequences for the actions they take. That’s the most negative I can think of.

Tom, you are wrong, and you are an idiot.

Threats like this are not going to do anything to deter terrorism. All they are going to do is piss off a bunch of people who may have never had any prior motivation to be angry at Americans or consider an attack on the United States.

The reality is that you are never going to be able to completely deter someone from doing something that they are willing to give their life to accomplish. All you can do is attempt to create the conditions that make it extremely difficult to actually carry out an attack.

Rhetoric like this should make Tancredo a laughing stock. Instead, he is a serious candidate for the GOP nomination.

First of all, you are right. It’s a stupid statment and almost makes the assumption that all followers of their faith are responsible or that the US will hold all of them responsible for the actions of a few extremists.

Second, do you really believe Tancredo is a serious candidate even before this statement?

I like his final comment, tying the amount of money ($25,000 to $50,000) to be smuggled into the United States, as an indication of terroristic motives. It reminds me of all those indentured servant terrorists that came over when the British colonized America.

i’m not so sure it’s a dumb statement. of course i agree that’s a bad idea, but the past seven years have shown us that many many americans LOVE terrible ideas.

it’s to get the rednecks talking about him, and i think it’s probably working. pretty smart, in an awful way.

You tell me. I have lost the ability to judge what makes a serious republican candidate.

I sure though W was a joke in early to mid ‘99.

I had to go looking for a picture of Tancredo to see who he was. Then I checked the polls. He was at the bottom.

As for what make a serious republican candidate? Someone that is actually a fiscal conservative, can speak publicly, is a strong leader and can get us out of this war as quickly as possible without leaving Iraq worse than we found it or in a state that will draw us back there again.

That would be a good start.

So what does it say about the Republican Party that their nominee in the last two elections was averaging 0.000 on your list? I’m inclined to believe it means that any knucklehead - especially Tancredo - has a shot.
