“I think the slice in my cheeck was from the bear walking over my face.”

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Local track racer Eric Stewart gets up close and personal with nature during his current work in Alaska:

In the middle of the alder ocean, alders began to shake violiently in front of me, and in a matter of about 3 seconds an enormous grizzley bear head emerges in front of me. During the previous two seconds I had taken the shotgun off my shoulder and started to load the slug into the chamber, but when I saw the bear about 4 feet in front of me, coming at me really, really fast I realized the futitlity in the action and just turned around. Wham! The bear knocked me to the ground, stood on me for about 2 or 3 seconds then climbed off me and ran away. I got up with blood dripping all over the ground, coming from my face. I felt around with my tongue and realized part of my cheek was drooping out. Loaded the shotgun, called for a helicopter pickup, and got the hell out of there.

Uhh…wow. I thought track racing was nerve wracking. Click on the link and check out his photo.

It’s a wondeful night for racing, for some I guess. I feel like hell.

If there was a light rail line from my house to the track I would use that thing like every week.

Tour de France stage 11 wrap up

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Astana made what would have been an otherwise boring day a bit exciting. Vino himself even went off the front in the final few kilos just to make sure that no one forgot his name.

I am not sure what Astana was attempting to do by driving so hard in the cross wind unless their sole objective was to put Moreau out of the overall. They may have succeeded at that but it seemed like a lot of work to eliminate just one guy.

Moreau was the big loser today.

The other big loser was, guess who!? BooBoo! He made the split and was in the perfect position to solidify his lead in the green jersey competition but the crash in the final kilometer held him up. So instead of putting the nail in the coffin of Zabel and Hushovd, his delay put stage winner Robert Hunter right into the heat of the battle for the points competition. BooBoo had 3 Quick•Step team mates who made the split and were there to help him in the final, but when a crash comes there is not much you can do about it. At least the race for the green jersey is going to stay interesting.

Another big loser may have been Dave Zabriskie. He might have been cut on time today but I don’t know what the hell “hors délais” means.

The final big loser was Fred Rodriguez who was involved in the crash. He will probably whine on the teevee tomorrow about how the biggest and most well organized race in the entire world is “dangerous.”
