Tour de France stage 5 wrap up
July 13th, 2007 |Astana had a bad day with both Kloden and Vino crashing. Vino lost a minute to the other GC contenders, Kloden could be out of the Tour if his now fractured tail bone is too painful to ride on.
Vino almost got his ass DQ’d when he was paced for a few minutes by his team car. I’m sure the officials read the Astana driver the riot act about his actions.
Green jersey contenders Freire, Bennati and Zabel were able to climb well enough to score points in the final sprint. BooBoo, not so much.
Some have decried my lambasting of Tom Boonen’s performance so far in the Tour this year. My response: What performance? A couple of days in the green jersey? No stage wins? I would contend that his Tour to date is far worse than last year when he at least wore the yellow jersey for a few days in the first week. Only Gert Steegmans has saved the Quick-Step team from being nearly a complete non-factor.
