Discovery Channel Team has declared itself to be “surprised,” “disappointed and saddened” by Ivan Basso’s disclosure that he was involved with Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes, “prior to being signed as a member” of the team. Directeur Sportif Johann Bruyneel called it “an unfortunate situation” for the team.

Oh please.

It’s the teams that create the pressure and the conditions that allow doping to occur. I believe that, instead of the riders enduring total responsibility and punishment for doping, the teams should also face suspension and fines for their riders doping offenses.

The current situation is clearly not working and things are not getting better, far from it. If professional cycling is serious about cleaning up (which I am skeptical that they are) they need to start applying pressure in a different place.
