NRO:

When I see the worsening degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentsia, I can’t help wondering if the day may yet come when the only thing that can save this country is a military coup.

Honest to god, sometimes I really think that conservatives hate this country.

Smithers Lunch?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

On the ride last night the Funkster told me he had a “Smithers Lunch.”

I asked him what that meant and he said he went to McDonalds and pigged out.

I politely explained to him that I don’t eat fast food, so he can’t call that a “Smithers Lunch.” He replied that hot dogs and Cheeze Whiz is not much better than McDonalds. I beg to differ.

Hot dogs and Cheeze Whiz is a home cooked meal, way better than fast food. Ergo, I am healthy and he is not.

Drunk and Happy Gnome Ride

Two questions:

• When was the last time you got nearly 85 miles in on a weeknight ride?

• Who cares about you? This is my blog…

I rode down to Bloomington to pick up Ped and got some extra mileage in. Ped and I picked up Scotty Rob in Edina and we made our way over to the meet spot.

Once we got there I noticed that there were a ton of riders that had showed up. I was shocked. PMax, B2B, some Birchwood women and some dudes I don’t know. Even Super Rookie made an appearance. We were a bit early yet so I had time to take a phone call from my boss and get yelled at a bit before we headed west. That was awesome.

I thought that I was going to be ok for the ride this week based on the warm up ride but as we rolled along the path towards SLP and Hopkins I started to feel worse and worse. At the bathroom break Super Rookie took a photo of me with his $500 dork phone that he carries with him while he rides (!) and then almost crashed climbing up McGinty Road when he rubbed his front tire on someone’s bike. Ped tried to lead me out for the Wayzata sprint but I did not have any snap in the legs. Sorry Ped.

Scotty Rob was going to turn around at Wayzata because he was not feeling that good so when he got gapped off at the stop light with Super Rookie and some others I figured he turned around. I waited for a bit to be sure but no one came along so I rolled back to the group. Climbing out of Wayzata, feeling like crap, who comes riding past me? Scotty Rob and Super Rookie. Super Rookie gave me the old “thanks for waiting asshole” comment as he rode past me. Totally awesome.

Things really got wound up on the way out to Lake Independence. The rotation was a bit difficult with that many people in the group. Things were yo-yoing and life was hard.

To add insult to injury I have had this stupid ass song stuck in my head for two weeks now. You know how that happens? You hear a song and all of sudden it is stuck rolling around inside your brain for weeks on end until it gets replaced by something else. There is nothing that can better sap the energy out of you on a hard ride than having some idiotic song running through your mind. I don’t even know where I heard it, I don’t have the time to watch day time teevee.

We did the alternate route around Lake Independence and I have to say that, with the exception of the road section on County Road 11, it was a fantastic addition to the ride. There is a rolling section to the west of the lake that made things interesting. Even CR11 was not so bad because there was not much traffic out last night.

Once we made the turn to ride around Baker park some dudes started yelling at each other. It seems like it happens every week. You get close to the red line, or past the red line, and start getting all mad and stuff and then someone pushes the pace and you get all madder and then the yelling commences. It’s awesome.

I cracked big time on the run back east. I had to spend a decent amount of time following wheels while we were dealing with the cross wind but started to feel OK again once we turned south into Wayzata.

I looked down at my Garmin when we were rolling along the path and was amazed to see that I had 75 miles in so far. It’s pretty great to be able to crank out a big ride like that on a weeknight.

Once I got back home I had a piece of wheat bread and a half glass of water for dinner and then went to bed. It was awesome.
