Surrender is not an option, BS petitions are just fine though
March 29th, 2007 |John McCain has a petition on his campaign website that you can sign and forward to Pelosi and Reid stating that withdrawal from Iraq will endanger America. Let’s take a look at his points:
The supplemental appropriations bill that passed the Senate on March 27, calling for a date certain withdrawal from Iraq, is nothing more than a guaranteed date of surrender.
That’s crap. A date certain withdrawal puts pressure on the Iraqis to get their problems solved before our withdrawal deadline. If they can’t get their problems figured out within the next 12 to 15 months I don’t believe that they ever will.
It is a refusal to acknowledge the dire consequences of failure, in terms of the stability in the Middle East and the resulting impact on the security of all Americans, whether home or abroad.
What are the true consequences of “failure?” That the terrorists will think we are a bunch of pussies? Who the hell cares what the terrorists think? If we get back to the true fight against terrorism instead of being bogged down in Iraq then we will be ready when the terrorists decide to strike. This obsession with the fact that the terrorists might think we are weak or soft is just useless naval gazing. We are either weak or soft or we are not. If we are really ready to deal with potential terrorist attacks then what ever the terrorists might think matters not.
Democrats have chosen the politically expedient position of failure rather than putting aside the small politics of the day in the interest of our nation and the values upon which this nation rests.
The action in Iraq has been mismanaged from the start and the situation now is beyond dire. It is what it is, regardless of what you want to call it. What is the easier political position to take, admitting the fact that the original goals are not going to be met and moving on or plowing ahead with a failed plan where the outcome is all but certain? I would argue that McCain and his ilk are taking the easier road in failing to admit and dealing with their own failure.
We the undersigned remain steadfast in our support for the war against terrorism and mindful of the consequences of failure in Iraq, even if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid refuse to acknowledge those consequences.
Continuing to attempt to connect the action in Iraq to the “war against terrorism” is asinine. Those who continue to attempt to make this connection have no credibility left.
We support our troops and the new strategy and believe it should be given the opportunity to succeed. American national security interests are directly at stake. Success or failure in Iraq is the transcendent issue for our foreign policy and our national security. People say they want to defeat the terrorists, but if we withdraw from Iraq prematurely, it will be the terrorists’ greatest triumph.
Every sentence in this point is wrong. Supporting the troops does not mean that they are sent in battle without adequate supplies, funding or an appropriate/realist strategy to meet the objective. American national security interests are not affected by our withdrawal from Iraq, just the opposite. The longer we stay, the worse things get, the more ill will we continue to engender towards the United States. Foreign terrorists account for a small fraction of those fighting in Iraq.
If we leave Iraq based on an artificial timetable, al Qaeda will be free to plan, train for and conduct operations from Iraq just as they did in Afghanistan before 9/11.
This point is just laughable. If we pull out of Iraq the country will be dominated by Shia Iraqis. The very last thing that the Shia will allow would be a Suuni terrorist group like al Qaeda to take up residence in their country. As a matter of fact, if the U.S. withdrawals one of the first things that will probably happen is for the Shia militia to proceed down a path of exterminating every single Suuni insurgent and terrorist group in the country.
McCain is running for President so it’s not a surprise that he is putting out this tripe. He either knows better and is just trying to distract those who don’t know better, or he himself doesn’t know any better.
Either way he doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously. (UPDATE 2:39pm - Not that it matters much after this news)
Why are we still in Iraq? I defy anyone to produce a legitimate reason for our continued presence.
