They own it
March 8th, 2007 |In the US Navy, the captain is ultimately responsible for the safety and security of his ship. One strike, he’s out. There is no room for honest mistakes or simple neglect. If his ship is incapacitated due to attack or accident he will never command another ship again. It’s a harsh system but it serves to assure that the captain will take his responsibility seriously 100% of the time.
Despite there being evidence that Iraq was not the threat that the Bush Administration made it to be, the Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq passed the House of Representatives (296–133) on October 10 2002 and the Senate the very next day (77–23).
Here we are, four and a half years later, still tied up in this debacle.
I’m sorry to say it, but I honestly think that those in the Bush Administration, as well as those in the House and Senate, should be disqualified from running for federal political office again. A screw up this massive should have severe consequences. For those in Congress it’s simply not enough to point the finger at the President and say that he tricked you into voting for the resolution by withholding all pertinent intelligence regarding Iraq’s WMD capability. The information was there if you cared to look for it. Furthermore, to complain that the vote was being held during the height of a federal election cycle advances no point other than showing that your political career is more important than your conscience.
Regrets to Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Chuck Hagel, John Kerry, Joe Lieberman, John McCain and Fred Thompson. You guys, and all the rest of those in Congress who supported action in Iraq, should go down with the ship. Serving in Congress is not just a rung on your career ladder, it’s purpose is to attend to the best interests of the citizens who sent you there. Sure, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Barack Obama and Bill Richardson were not in Congress and did not have the make the choice you had to make in 2002. Such is life, I don’t feel at all bad for you. This war should be as heavy an anchor around your neck as it is for President Bush.
