T10KL
February 8th, 2007 |OK, so Tour of 10,000 Lakes is kaput. Who’s fault is it?
Probably yours. Let’s find out.
• Single or married with no children under 5 years old?
• Work regular hours at a regular job?
• Raced in local bike races for over 5 years?
• Train more than 5 hours a week?
• Never promoted a bike race yourself?
• Never volunteered at a bike race yourself?
• Never been a USA Cycling official yourself?
Answered “yes” to all these questions? Congratulations, it is all your fault that T10KL got cancelled.
I don’t blame Kevin Lennon for pulling the plug. He organized this event for a number of years and he’s not a professional race promoter. As far as I am concerned he has given a lot more back to the local racing community than he has taken. Bravo Kevin and thank you.
But an event like this, any event, needs one guy to be in charge. Without one guy in charge it’s just not going to happen.
Kevin has the right to veto any changes to his event if he is still involved. If you want to call the event “Tour of 10,000 Lakes” then you have to do things Kevin’s way. If you don’t want to do things Kevin’s way then start your own stage race and call it “Le Grand Fromage” and run it how ever you want. You could have even had it on the same weekend since T10KL is cancelled.
What you can’t do is complain about the race being cancelled if you answered yes to all the questions above.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s my fault too. I can answer “yes” to a few of those questions and I did nothing to keep T10KL from getting cancelled in 2007. Ten years ago I may have stepped up, ten years from now I may be able to step up. But it’s not happening for me now. So I am not going to complain about it.
We are all busy. Credit goes out to those who are busy and still find the time to give back to their community.
Are you complaining about it? Maybe you should do something about it.
