Seriously, if you’re a maker of any type of consumer electronics, you have to just be hoping and praying that Apple doesn’t decide to venture into your market.
I’m pretty sure they just killed Blackberry, Palm, and TiVo.
Think so? I don’t.
Don’t get me wrong, I think this thing will be great for its intended consumer group. This would be those who are heavy MP3 file users and those looking to view multimedia applications while on the go. Having this device will eliminate the need to carry a MP3 player and mobile phone at the same time. But a Blackberry or Treo killer?
Blackberry and Treo devices are business smartphones. The device connects to some kind of message server which shares the resources of that server to all the devices that connect to it. Most of those who connect to the server are using the same device which is well supported by the IT staff at the company hosting the server. The device has a removable media card which can be used to download information that can be shared between other devices. The device also has a full QWERTY keyboard which allows for easy messaging and document editing.
While I think the iPhone will be very successful, it does not offer the features that are required for a pure business application. The benefit of the iPhone for users of Blackberry, Treo and similar devices is that it has features that everybody wants. It will drive companies like RIM, Palm, HTC, etc to incorporate these features into future products making the next generation of smartphones even better for everybody.
I welcome the iPhone, but I am not going to buy one.
