Gay Marriage!
Friday, April 21st, 2006You know what the problem is with this gay marriage debate? The word “marriage”.
Marriage is the word that is used by the state to recognize the union between a man and a woman. It is also the term that gay marriage activists want to use to describe the union between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. The fact is that the word “marriage” is a religious term that should not be recognized by the state at all.
If the state did not recognize marriage, and would only recognize a civil union between two people, I think it would go a long way towards solving this issue for most people. I don’t see any reason why the state can not accept any civil union between two consenting adults as being equal in the eyes of the state.
The only issue then is what to do with the word “marriage”. A marriage can still take place in a church and can exist alongside the civil union if the couple desires to have it. But the state should not bother attempting to define what marriage is or is not. The state should recognize only the civil union.
The reality of this situation is that is would instantly legitimize gay marriage. There are plenty of churches out there that are currently willing to perform marriage between couples of the same gender. It is meaningless however because the state does not provide all the benefits of marriage to those with civil unions. Fixing the civil union issue would solve all these problems however.
The problem for the anti-gay marriage crowd is that they don’t like homosexuals. They don’t want homosexual marriage, homosexual civil union or homosexual adoption. They don’t want homosexual unions to be recognized in any form what so ever as it would be a de facto endorsement of homosexuality, a “behavior” that they see as immoral and against their religious beliefs. Too damn bad for them as far as I am concerned…
