Sascha is doing the Tour de Cure. So am I. If you are not going to sponsor her then you should sponsor me.

I expect everyone who considers themselves a friend of mine to pony up with the mad cash. Consider it a donation for all the good times I provide you with this website…

Watch Leif Hoste say “please” and “god dammit” on WorldCycling.tv. Please sounds like “astableeft” and god dammit sounds like “got fo domma”. Typical reaction to the press scrum at the end of a pro race.

Belgians say god dammit a lot during bike races. I was on the receiving end of god dammit a number of times when I was raicng in Belgium. Leave a gap on the wheel in front of you and you hear “Hey get on the veel, GOT FO DOMMA!”

Lance Gunderson

You know, Armstrong’s name at birth was Lance Gunderson. Do you think Lance Gunderson could have won 7 Tours?

How much does your name play a roll in the outcome of your life? I’d like to think “not much”, but I’m not so sure that Lance Gunderson could have won 7 Tours.

That whole “LiveStrong” thing would have been different for sure. Maybe it would have been “WonderSon” or something…

FYI: Pearl Izumi is fred-wear. Not that there is anything wrong with fred-wear, freds have to wear something. But you don’t have to wear it. Unless you’re a fred, in which case you are probably already wearing it. So enjoy those Microsensor 3D “Pro” shorts…

Well, with 6 days to go I am really happy with my current weight situation.

Sure, I could have fasted like a monk and got down into the 180’s, but let’s get real here. I like to ride, but I like to eat too.

I weighed in at 192 this morning but we will see tomorrow how accurate that really is. Team Urthel had the first of our Opus Alternative Tuesday Night Tough Guy rides (even though Opus does not start for a week). I ended up with four hours on the bike by the time I got back home. I ate quite a bit and rehydrated but tomorrow’s scale check will be a truer check of where I am at.

Fitness wise I am getting closer to where I think I should be for this time of year, especially considering that we had Baby Smithers just four and a half months ago and the fact that I was not able to even begin training until January 1. My climbing kind of sucks and I am probably only 85-90% or so on the flat, but I’m still happy. My main goal this season is to do well at the track so I really don’t care about climbing with the angels. I just want to be able to turn the big gear on the flats and be able to sprint after a really hard effort.

If you are looking for an alternative to Opus that heads towards the west instead of going east for the Gopher ride you should join us. The goal is two hours of fairly hard effort and we sure got that last night. Check the Urthel Blog for more info.

I’ve pretty much decided that I am not going to race at Opus this year. Nothing against the Loon’s or the others who race out there, I am just tired of Opus. I have spent too many evenings out there going up and down on Yellow Circle Drive and I can’t take it any more.

This weekend is the Oxbow Classic which is a hilly freak race so I’ll pass on that. The following weekend is Durand, I may or may not go out there. It’s kind of far to drive and the last time I raced out there I got dropped so it may not be worth the time and trouble. It depends on what the other Urthels do. Ken Woods? Maybe. Avon Road Race? Probably. Track racing starts on May 18th and I am in for that for sure.

We are riding out to Afton for a couple of laps on the race course if you are interested in joining us. It will be posted on the Urthel Blog.

Ezra Klein:

The problem, of course, is that Bush isn’t flailing because this White House is insufficiently politically adept. He’s flailing because the major policies on which he’s staked his presidency are self-destructing. Iraq is a bloodbath, the deficit threatens to swallow the country whole, the Middle East is less stable than ever, economic insecurity is rampant, inequality has risen, the government response to a national disaster was staggeringly incompetent etc, etc. So while any of Lizza’s ideas might result in a temporary bump, that spike would rapidly flatten under the perpetual stream of bad news. Fact is, Bush is proving that presidencies are about something more than communication strategies. This White House was predicated on the belief that policies didn’t matter, only politics did. That’s been disproven, they’ve found themselves unable to fight failure with photo-ops. And this country will be better for it.

The real amazing part of this is that this Administration, and 30% of Americans, acutally believe that everything is going really well…
