Failure of Leadership

Friday, June 3rd, 2005

From Thomas Friedman’s latest, The World is Flat:

“If President Bush made energy independence his moon shot, in one fell swoop he would dry up revenue for terrorism, force Iran, Russia, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia onto the path of reform-which they will never do with $50-a-barrel-oil-strengthen the dollar, and improve his own standing in Europe by doing something huge to reduce global warming. He would also create a real magnet to inspire young people to contribute to both the war on terrorism and America’s future by again becoming scientists, engineers, and mathematicians…Unfortunately for America, it appears as though I will go to the moon before President Bush will go down this road.”

Instead the Republican led Congress cut funding for the National Science Foundation by over $100 million. How can that be justified?

I continue to be struck by the oppotunity wasted by President Bush after the attacks of 9/11. Instead of inspiring our country towards greatness he called on Americans to go shopping and take a vacation while working to protect his friends in the oil and gas industry.

Instead of greatness we have Abu Ghraib and Gitmo.
